Re: Should I run at 100% 24x7 or a little less?

I ran a little experiment on a 12 core 3600X machine. (Ubuntu) There is a graphic CPU meter on the task bar with 12 yellow bars.

Using the CPU usage/CPU time at 100/100 the 12 bars are at max as you would expect. 12 tasks running temp ~70
At 50/100 you could expect 6 bars to drop to nothing. 12 bars are dancing up and down but none go to max. 6 tasks running temp ~63
I go back to 100/100 and let the temp get back to ~70.
At 100/50 all 12 bars alternate between 0 and max during equal time periods. 12 tasks running temp ~63

Re: Should I run at 100% 24x7 or a little less?

If you can set the CPU's to a lower frequency, that will help a lot.

The power used by the CMOS transistors in a CPU goes up by the square of the frequency. So a chip clocked at 2 GHz will use 4X the power of that same chip clocked at 1 GHz. Obviously, the machines have disk drives, memory, I/O etc that probably won't follow the same square of frequency rule, but you should see some power savings. The CPU's will also run cooler which extends their life.

Personally, I try to run my Laptops slow enough so that the fan doesn't come on. which is usually when the CPU is under 50 C degrees. Heat is not good for electronics.

You will still get the same credit on WCG for hours.days, and years, but your points and number of results returned will be lower. Since most CPUs are much faster than their memory systems, they tend to wait for data more than they actually do work. Therefore, the hit on number of results and points may not be that significant relative to the decrease in the CPU s frequency.

Hope this is helpful.

Re: Should I run at 100% 24x7 or a little less?

I read that a lot about lower frequencies.

Here is what I did using a suggestion from flynryan.
https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewpostinthread?post=653728
TL;DR
I changed BCLK Frequency from 100.00 to 98.00 then the auto tuner in the "AI" up'ed the Mhz to 4000 and lowered the volts to 1.2nn. The default was 3800 Mhz and 1.4nn volts.

Not disputing anything you say but how did the opposite work?. It's all there in those 2 posts on the link along with the suggestion from flynryan previous to mine. Didn't I just overclock? It's a bit confusing.

I'm guessing the lower voltage did it (lowered the temp). Less power=less heat.

BobbyB - I agree with you. Power = (Voltage *Voltage)/Resistance so lowering the voltage takes advantage of the square effect.
I am wondering if I am mistaken about my statement of lowering frequency benefiting from square law. Glad you got the right advice.
