The Computation Moonshoot Competition

We are excited to announce a competition encouraging high school students to learn about data science and distributed computing using BOINC and World Community Grid.

Re: The Computation Moonshoot Competition

Can someone please explain to me how it makes ANY sense to promote an event to raise WCG awareness to highschoolers when WCG themselves have stated they do not want teens to engage with the project?

Like, look, on the information packet, slide 12, step 3. Maybe this wouldn't be the case in US' education system, in which case you can ignore the comment, but I'd assume the vast majority of people that are still in highschool in March-May would be under in 18, which would quite literally mean the event is promoting a violation of ToS.... so what gives?

Has something good finally come from Kembril administration and WCG is finally interested in promoting distributed computing to the young once again?

Nice catch.

World Community Grid Terms of Use
By participating on the WCG Site or in WCG Research projects, you agree that:

1. You are at least 18 years old and, if you are accepting these Terms of Use on behalf of a company or other entity as well as for yourself, you are authorized to do so.

Perhaps WCG should amend the TOU to something like 13+ to allow for youth participation while still being compliant with many laws regarding children on the Internet.

IBM didn't care. When the terms were changed to include that 18+ clause, I pointed out how dumb it was, to which they basically responded "nah, we really don't want help from the younger generation, this is here to stay".

But lucky for us, this is not in IBM's hands anymore. There's a new body in charge, and now would be the perfect time to fix one of their mistakes.

Re: The Computation Moonshoot Competition

We (a high school in the USA) have known about this for a while and do respect the ToS, although we would love them to be changed as well. I am the only one (as the teacher) who has access to the account. Students do not have separate accounts. All of our systems are on that singular account.

The current ToS will be an issue for two of the three categories of the Moonshot competition and we accept that we have no chance in those two categories.

We would love to see the ToS be amended but I know that would not be a simple process. Let's hope!

Probably lost so many users during "migration" project that they had no other choice.

Re: The Computation Moonshoot Competition

Then revise the ToS if you're desperate for crunchers.

Re: The Computation Moonshoot Competition

@ Dr. Jurisica:

Can the WCG Terms of Use be amended from minimum age 18 to minimum age 13 to allow youth participation? I had no idea that language was even in place all this time.

I started distributed computing projects (with distributed.net's RC5-64 project) when I was a young teenager -- perhaps age 14 -- and my passion for these kinds of projects has continued in adulthood.

It would be a shame if more younger people were discouraged from learning about these fun projects due to legal language that sets an arbitrarily high minimum age.

Thank you for your consideration.

Re: The Computation Moonshoot Competition

I can't see how age could come into play on this subject. Maybe some legal CYA.

Wait! It would cut into a teen's TikTok time. tongue
