Re: Discovery Channel

Dave,
just came across your thread...... I like it.

Whenever I partcipate in such discussions, I ask myself the following question "Am I capable of comprehending the subject in total - from all aspects"? My opinion is limited to my knowledge, understanding and ability to verbalise my thoughts.

since I have these limitations, I look for inspiration in different people. C.S.Lewis is no doubt my favourite: listen here

To answer your question; - I have no idea what came first, but I find the probability of our reality being what it is today without His influence, hard to justify.

Re: Discovery Channel

To cap it all

They (the Discovery Channel) claimed that beaching's of Whales and Dolphin's was down to an inate desire to return to the land from where they came.

They said that these events would be eradicated in one or two life cycles as this trait would be eliminated by natural selection and that by us assisting them on their return to the sea we were only prolonging the occurance of these types of events

d oh

btw I love the Discovery Channel and all things sciency

Re: Discovery Channel

Lol, "only one or two life cycles"? What the heck? Did they really say that? I think I'm starting to see your point about the "stating as scientific fact, no questions asked" thing.

So if it weren't for us pushing them out all the time, in a couple of dolphin and whale lifetimes they'll evolve to no longer have the urge to get themselves beached? So I guess that for the thousands of years since humans and whales have been living together on this planet, we've been pushing them out all day long and prolonging this unfortunate behaviour?

One or two lifetimes seems a tiny bit short, to me. Should we also stop untangling dolphins from fishermans nets so that they'll eventually evolve the ability to avoid them in "one or two lifecycles"? tongue

Natural selection is a strange beast. Sometimes it works to make creatures stronger, faster, more intelligent. But it's also just as likely to wipe out entire species from the face of the Earth. Couple this to the amount of damage that modern, industrialised human beings are doing to the environment, and, well, you can already see what happens.

Aww, but we just cain't leave poor little Rex on the beach like that, pa. sad

Re: Discovery Channel

Hi Michael

I kid ye not. Word for word

I've just realised the error of my ways. This is my Dog Penny she's 10 years old now and has silver ears and she's going a bit blind and a bit deaf.

Sorry for the faux pas but as you can see it's an easy mistake to make

biggrin

I agree, RobSab. It's the best thread on the forum. applause

Try Voltaire's take on the subject: "Why is it any more incredible to be born twice, then it is to be born once." thinking

As to which came first, the remora or itchy shark? As far as I can tell, there is no such thing as an itchy shark. That is, apart from the particular shark who has a remora stuck to it and then who subsequently develops contact dermatitis. wink

The remora wins by default. biggrin

David, just make certain that Rex doesn't read the BBS news service today. It would only make the poor lad depressed.

UN urges protection for dolphins

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4464784.stm

The most compelling paragraph in this article:

"On the other hand, we know enough to say that pretty much all the river dolphins are threatened, and in fact the next mammal to go extinct will probably be a river dolphin - it's as serious as that."

- - -

And David, please do give Penny a slice of apple from all of us Yanks on this wonderful holiday. peace

Re: Discovery Channel

Hi Julied

Oh no

Not those River Dolphins with the uniquely flexible necks so they can swim in and out of the tree roots and other debris that they encounter in Rivers, them being River Dolphins and all.

They're not perfectly fit for purpose too d oh.

You know you would think they had been designed to do that

It's uncanny wink
