As of Oct 10, 1040 MDT, changing Project Weight in Device Profiles is having no effect on the client side, even though the page says that changes have been successful.

In BOINC, the Project Weight controls the amount of time the client will allocate to a particular project, it also helps control the amount of work that will be downloaded relative to other projects. The setting appears at the bottom of the Device Profile modification page.

The setting appears at the bottom of the Device Profile modification page. The setting works but it can take days to sync itself. There is a setting in the cc_config.xml file :- <rec_half_life_days>X</rec_half_life_days> that you can use to speed up the sync, I set X to 1 in place of the default 10. |

You probably know that WCG is seen as 1 project, so project weight has no influence on WCG sub-projects like MCM1, ARP1 or OPN1.When you add a new project to BOINC, it will request only work for that new project until the recent estimated credit (REC) evens out. Crashtech is active in +20 BOINC project so I guess that is project weight that is the main concern. But he/she got the correct answer - it takes time to level out.

The various project weight settings for every project are displayed in a column in the advanced view of the BOINC client. While it's true that the effects of changing the setting take time to manifest, the numerical value of the setting is expected to display properly in the client immediately after communication with the server takes place. This isn't happening with WCG now. This change in behavior is why I am asserting that the setting it broken on the WCG server side.

I suspect that project weight settings suffer the same problems that are seen with device registrations and other device/profile changes. Sometimes it takes quite a few days for the changes to filter through :-(
If the web form is submitting the changes to the non-BOINC database and the mechanism for telling BOINC is running late (or not at all), what crashtech reported would happen so I thought I'd test this myself... I changed the project weight on the default project and tried several Updates on more than one system (and yes, they are all on the default!); no change... So I also upped my MCM1 quotas to see whether the issue is with more aspects of the profile, and so far it still seems to be using the old quota (and, as often happens, it is not always replacing reported tasks at once anyway...) I initiated this test at about 18:50 UTC on 2024-10-12. I'll keep checking periodically to see if/when the project weight changes -- I suspect it won't be until after the weekend, but... I rather suspect that the data centre "planned outage" has something to do with this :-( Cheers - Al. P.S. A post in the Device Profiles issue News thread or one of the forums in the Support category might have come to WCG's attention slightly sooner (but then again...) |
