Nick van de Giesen, a professor of Water Management at TU Delft, discusses the African Rainfall Project, a collaboration with the World Community Grid launched six years ago. The project models rainfall patterns in sub-Saharan Africa to improve weather forecasts, aiding farmers and preventing flash floods. Volunteers play a crucial role by processing small domains of data, contributing to large-scale simulations that require immense computational power. With 80% of the project complete, discoveries are expected to enhance understanding of Africa’s rainfall patterns by 2025. Vincent Hoogelander, a PhD candidate, is developing a user interface for accessing and visualizing the project’s data. He also explores how larger weather patterns can emerge by combining smaller simulation domains, paving the way for further scientific breakthroughs and improved weather predictions.
