How can I update device name on the website?

I believe the device name in my device management should be the same as host name. I've changed my host name for a few devices months ago, but the website is still showing the old names. Other BOINC projects have all updated upon next contact with the server.

More interestingly, I can retrieve results through the WCG API and it has the updated "DeviceName". This means the server/database actually knows the updated name, but somehow the website still displays the old name. Is it possible to get device management page to display the current device name? Thanks.

Re: How can I update device name on the website?

I have the same situation. The Devices page has the outdated / older name, the Results page shows the newer / correct name. A way to update or merge the values in Devices would be helpful. Devices also is not showing some names after they have been changed.

It goes by the BOINC ID number inside one of the XML files on your system. You can change Hostname all you want, but once it's keyed to the ID # it won't change in the Devices page unless you uninstall & remove the XML file so it will regenerate a new one upon BOINC reinstall.

One of my confounding issues is on a system that previously had Linux -- I dropped partitions, wiped the disk, and installed Windows with new BOINC apps, everything. Somehow it's reporting under a very old Device name I've not seen in years. I have over 2-dozen systems and have to remember this one holdout...

Fixing the Device page is basically what I'm asking for. Despite the old names, the Device page still correctly matches profiles and stats. To me, this means the page must have access to the underlying ID (or some unique derivative) that can match the device name to its results which contains the latest device name.

unless you uninstall & remove the XML file so it will regenerate a new one upon BOINC reinstall.

This works for other projects but may not be sufficient for WCG. See the link below.

It's likely when your new installation contacted the server for the first time, it happen to match all the information listed below.

That machine was missing (4) of the (6) parameters in that List so I don't necessarily believe that (i.e. - OS Debian Linux -> Windows; a Linux box's Domain would never be "WorkGroup" unless manually set; additional RAM was installed while I had it out; IP address changed; HostName was completely different; etc). Additionally it was a fresh install on a wiped-disk so the BOINC ID was in no way the same as before.

I buy many surplus machines and swap-out as they burn-up, etc. Perhaps it somehow matched a previous box. Unknown. It's just an odd-one-out that I have to manage differently.

However, we're deviating from the original person's question. Hopefully they got enough information to solve their problem.

Re: How can I update device name on the website?

I reported had my MacBook Pro for the longest time (+5 years) showing up with the host name of a Windows 7 machine that went to the electronic waste also at least 6 years ago (before we moved to the current office). It would intermittent show the correct host name before reverting back to that of the no longer existing Windows host. This hasn't happened anymore since about the month long outage before the end of the year, it keeps right now showing the proper macOS host name...
