The cc_config.xml file in the BOINC directory can be used to force BOINC to log a very verbose set of debug messages. This is explained on the BOINC site at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Client_configuration
----------------------------------------For example, using a text editor to insert <checkpoint_debug>1</checkpoint_debug> into the cc_config.xml file will cause BOINC 5.10 to log the checkpoints in the Messages tab and in file stderrdae.txt [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Sep 16, 2008 6:27:26 AM] |

Occasionally this "Message from server: Invalid or missing account key" will appear in the message log of a new BOINC client install. The device registration process should automatically fill in the correct data, which at times does not occur when the Server message system has not transported the information across to other parts of the database. This that can be checked and fixed.
----------------------------------------1. Find the account_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml file which is located in the BOINC data directory and look for the <authenticator> field. Compare the value to the one that is shown in your My Grid > My Profile at the BOINC account key field. If the same, report the problem on forum and ask for a technician to check if the Message system needs restarting. 2. If the fields are not identical or the <authenticator> field is empty apply the remedy: Open BOINCmgr: Still in BOINCmgr Find and select World Community Grid and enter member name / password when asked. All should now be working. If not, there is a different way to force the situation and that is to use the boinccmd tool. The BOINC wiki explains. It entails opening a DOS cmd window, navigating to the BOINC program dir and typing boinccmd --project_attach URL AccountKey The account key for WCG is on the My Grid > My Profile for example BOINC Account Key: 0aa801caa57e5c375e123076e123e18f BOINC Project URL: www.worldcommunitygrid.org the command would thus be: boinccmd --project_attach www.worldcommunitygrid.org 0aa801caa57e5c375e123076e123e18f The Unofficial BOINC wiki explains a little about the Account Key: http://www.boinc-wiki.info/index.php?title=Account_Key ** What is Simple View and Advanced View? If you find that remote controlling of a BOINC client is very slow, particularly when switching back to the local client do as follows to speed this up:
----------------------------------------to switch back do same: The last step does not require any entries. The default when leaving the fields blank is to switch back to the local client. How to set up the clients on for Remote Control is covered in an article of the (Official) BOINC wiki article: Controlling BOINC remotely

As of client version 6 it's possible to control the amount of CPU time used by the Screensaver. For that go to the Device Manager, choose the profile [home, school, work or default], select the Custom radio button and go down to the Graphics section. The fields available with defaults are:

The complete FAQ index is found here Caveat: For those doing Graphical Processor Unit (GPU) crunching elsewhere or in the future at WCG, during these periods there will not be a science display shown in the screensaver, only the WCG or BOINC logo. This is because the science takes all GPU processing power. If this will change we will not know until WCG launches a GPU based project.

From version 6.10.25 ** the screensaver settings have received an overhaul and expansion (Windows and Mac):
----------------------------------------1. It's now possible to only show the BOINC logo moving around the screen with job progress info and switch times for multi threaded devices [multicore]. 2. How long to show the project graphics and set switch times for multi-threaded devices [multicore] 3. Prominent position when the screensaver should turn to blank the screen, switching off the CPU cycles eating graphics. This is the ideal moment to set the operating system to also transit the display into energy saving mode. ![]() For more on screensaver topics see previous posts in this thread. ** This is an alpha test client! Look for a formal stable release or endorsement by WCG expected some time in 2010.
