Re: Why should I bother with joining a team confused confused confused

If the team concept has no appeal to you, simply continue to crunch as an individual. I am at a loss as to why you would consider it a bother. wink

(1) Drifting from team to team: A team like Base Camp at grid.org is a good place to start. They do "guest crunching" every week by joining different teams temporarily. I do not know whether there are any with the same philosophy here at wcg or not.

As part of the BC (We call ourselves Base campers) team. I can tell you we are here. We came after grid started messing up but have not been very active or maybe orginized would be a better word. You can visit us at THIS site.

It's a good idea that's been tossed out before, kh. From what I can tell, this Forum is not capable of easily putting these revisions into effect.

Now, the best reason for joining a Team?

Easy. To have a place to go just to irritate your team mates. biggrin peace

Just don't irritate some of 'em too much. smile

Seriously, standing on the outside and looking in isn't the best way to gain a true perspective of what teamwork means here. Try working with a couple of teams before reaching a final decision, you can always leave again.

Re: Why should I bother with joining a team confused confused confused

Well, I realized a long time ago that joining a team wouldn't directly benefit my contribution to the WCG. The values of teams are the intangibles - getting to know your fellow teammates, sharing knowledge and common interests, shooting the breeze - there are all kinds of possibilities. I simply tried to look at joining a team beyond just my own possible interest. What about someone new to WCG who's recently joined and learns about the existence of teams? Well, they can pick a team to join via the "Find A Team To Join" link on their My Grid page. That means that they can pick a team based on the letter the team name starts with or a word that appears in the team's name. Doesn't really give you a whole lot of information about the team. Okay, you happen to go look into the forums and find the Teams forum. Maybe you can learn a bit more about teams there. Well, you can start going thru each of the team threads. The first ones you'll go thru will likely be the ones with the more recent posts. The teams with the most recent posts aren't necessarily the ones that may best match your interests/needs. Also, is that fair to the other teams who simply don't have a recent post to their thread? How many folks are going to go thru that many threads before they pick just pick one of the teams with a recent post or just give up altogether? Being new to WCG, they might just like the thought of joining a team with it's own forum. Some folks could find posting in the WCG Forums a little bit uncomfortable, a little too visible. Maybe they want to be able to converse with others that speak their own language. Not everyone is proficient in English. There's a myriad of possibilities, including not particularly caring about what a given team is like since you're a bit of a "grazer". If the process lets those who want find a team that is a good match for what they need then, they and WCG benefit. Nothing stops them from moving on to another team. I do see teams as they are but I simply was also trying to see our teams for what they could be as well.

I was about to post the same sentiment.

keithhenry, have you been to the http://thedczone.com/phpbb2/index.php

More Teams are posting there. And it's not just for recruiting reasons. Many DC projects are discussed there, as well as many technical issues as well.

There is a wealth of knowledge there (besides those Teams who also have their own great forums as well). You name it. From overclocking to the best cpu's to use for DC projects, to other technical issues and yes, even forums for some good and friendly chit chat.

Re: Why should I bother with joining a team confused confused confused

Personally, I can't imagine very many people scrolling through what might be a very long chain of posts describing the various teams. I think the current method of doing a search by key word within team descriptions is adequate. It doesn't take long to find a team or group of similar teams that would interest you or else be fairly certain that one does not exist on WCG; you can then check that teams size, performance (stats), and team thread to see whether it is very active and/or offers what you are looking for.

You are correct that joining a team isn't necessary. All it really does is add an element of fun -- some friendly competition -- by which team members who follow the stats are generally motivated to actively recruit new members, hopefully who are not already crunching. You might want to form your own team and see what you can do with it. Personally, I think you'd derive more self-satisfaction from that then joining some random team just for the sake of being on a team. But if you find a particular team to be more sociable and think you need to join that team to participate in that team's thread, then go for it. It hasn't appeared to me that membership is a criteria to be welcome in any team's thread; I've posted in a number of them, even with my signature lines, and have likewise noticed many others doing the same thing. If you want to make a polticial or social statement of sorts (Democrat, Republican, liberal, conservative) or support a sports team, etc., you can probably find a group with very little trouble searching with the current tools.

Despite what a few members in WCG might think, I don't try to recruit here; I think recruitment from within WCG accomplishes nothing except increasing team size and points. Although it is permitted by the rules, I think it is silly - plain and simple. I've said it before, and I irritated a few folks. Tough! That's how I feel. And so, while I'm not going to tell anyone that they can't join my team if they are not a HomeBrewer (I have no way of confirming that one way or the other), my team is created for folks who either brew their own beer or think they would like to try it someday, and so I recruit from within many homebrewing forums.

Having said all of that, I, too, am puzzled about what you are looking for. If it's socialization, there are literally thousands upon thousands of forums on the Internet focusing on every conceivable subject which are just as warm and welcoming as WCG forums.

Good luck in your search.

I would second all that. Recruiting from outside WCG is the whole point of recruitment. If any existing members want to switch allegiance, that is entirely their own business.

Some people just think way too much.

Damn the torpedos, full speed ahead, I say.

If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space!

When was the last time you did something for the first time?

Just do it. Join a team. Join Us. We're happy, carefree. After all, doesn't everyone want that? Just to be gay? dancing
