:::PLEASE DO NOT BAN ME FOR MAKING A SILLY SUGGESTION:::
WCG VIRUS: A virus on behalf of mankind. Make a totally unseen/ uncheckable version of WCG. People forget they are running it or just dont know. Totally invisble (after you maunally download it) Call it stealthgrid (would also be great for those people who dont care about screensavers and tray icons.) (essentailly just a super simple build with no GUI) |

a) Installing any software without permission is illegal. What you describe is very like spyware, which is also illegal. Even if you could get around that, it would be unethical.
b) You can already configure the BOINC client to be unobstrusive, for example a university may configure all their computers to run the client without affecting the users. |

No, not polite.
----------------------------------------But wouldn't it be great if we had someone with great influence to bring the cause to the attention of large numbers of computer users, who might then join voluntarily? Someone like IBM? Ah, we have them. Um er, MICROSOFT then? Possibilities:- Impossible Dream Level - MICROSOFT includes a distributed computing client facility in its new operating system (LONGDRAWN or whatever its called ![]() Cloud Nine Level - MICROSOFT bundles BOINC as bonus software on its Windows CD. Daydream - Microsoft's website carries a few lines of info about distributed computing and a few links for download. (now thats not so hard is it?) A search of Microsofts knowledge base for grid computing terms gave me 2 articles on the subject. SETI and Climate prediction are mentioned. There is mention of using the resources of .NET. Does anyone else know of any Microsoft interest in (humanitarian not for profit) distributed Computing? http://g.msn.com/9SE/1?http://research.micros...;CE=1&CS=AWP&SR=1 http://g.msn.com/9SE/1?http://www.microsoft.c...;CE=2&CS=AWP&SR=2 |

While were dreaming...why don't we just advertise at the Super Bowl for million billion dollars...lol People would forget it anyways and not write it down.
Now if everyone had a stake or personal interest in it then maybe we'd have alot more people running the grid. Wonder how much trouble it would be to advertise on MySpace...everyone is already on the computer...dunno who would run it on there but just a thought. Let's just package it with another program such as yahoo messenger :) All these other companies sneak junk into third party programs...although this wouldn't be junk and actually have a valuable function. Until then looks like a select few responsible individuals will have to carry the torch for those who don't know any better....maybe, our gov't is right in thinking people aren't responsible...i'm just as unsure of our gov't as they are about us tho! |
