Re: NO WORK

I'm sorry to hear that you have decided to leave the project. Your work requests were rather small. Did you try setting your connect to the network every 1.0 days or even up to 2.0 days?

This issue appears to be solved, I will be looking into why this occured. I have not been able to recreate this issue on either my linux or windows boxes.

HuH! Why "up" work requests if there is non?

Or is that what everybody else has done and there is no work available 'cos everybody is sitting with 4 or 5 WU waiting to be processed.

Sorry, not taking it out on you blushing ... just peaved off with it all ... sad

I should not need to "ask for more work" or even be sat idle ... it should be automaticly done ... I shouldn't need to do anything.

Sorry again ... sad

Re: NO WORK

muckshifter,

I completely understand your frustration and no offense taken.

The reason why I ask if you have tried upping how much work your machine has in its cache is because of this off chance that the load balancer causes this quirk in the system. If this happens when your system requests more work you will have some work still cached on your system to be processed. Hopefully the load balance will be fixed by the time your machine actually runs out of cached work, meaning less idle time for your system.

Again, I am sorry that you have decided to leave World Community Grid, we would like for you to stay and continue crunching.

Also, was this issue happening on your Windows or linux boxes?

This seems to be normal for BOINC - my setup frequently only requests 2 or 3 seconds of work. I suppose it is a result of having an always on net connection. BOINC requests the least amount it needs to pad out its cache, gets a mere one work unit, and doesn't need to request more for ten hours or so.

Re: NO WORK

I have seen this in a number of BOINC forums. David Anderson was working on this section of the code back in January or February. Some day a fix will be made that works. Maybe the very next release? Who knows?

BOINC has a lot of small problems like this, but people are working on them.

Muckshifter,

Thank you for reporting this problem to us. We are looking into what caused this problem. To give you some background on this problem.

This error message is generated when there is work available to send but all of the work currently in the shared memory buffer (a caching mechanism that BOINC utilizes) only has work that has been designated for a platform other then the platform requesting work.

Both FightAIDS@Home and Human Proteome Folding projects compute results that vary slightly due to the way that microsoft and linux round. This difference is not significant to the data computed but it does prevent the results returned from windows and linux from being able to be easily validated against each other. This is not an uncommon occurance and as a result BOINC has a mechanism built in that deals with this.

BOINC can be configured so that when the first result for a workunit is assigned to a computer, all of the remaining results for that workunit will only be sent to a computer that runs the same operating system. However, this leads to a problem in that if the only results in the 'shared memory buffer' are available for a given operating system you will see that error message occur.

When we initially launched BOINC in Nov of last year there were a lot of problems related to this. We made some changes that significantly reduced this problem and only occasional did users get this message and it always self corrected within a short timeframe (read 20-30 minutes). However, today this problem occurred and lasted for 3-4 hours. We are still getting a couple but it is improving quickly. We will be investigating what happened differently today as compared to other days and take corrective action.

I am sorry that this error occurred and the inconvience that it caused you. Please be assured that we are working to correct the problem and that we will work to avoid this problem in the future.
