as part of the installation, you are supposed to run this command: ./boinc -attach_project www.worldcommunitygrid.org 5c49427099355a7f18c279978f37871c
however, when I do so it wont perform the command because it says that another instance of BOINC is running. How do i fix this? I am using Ubuntu, btw... oh, and one more thing, does it even really matter if it doesnt attach the project? if it doesnt, then tell me what i have to do to start helping out, please. Thanks. |

The first problem is that you can start a second instance of BOINC while another instance is running. However, you can execute the attach command via the boinc_cmd tool:
./boinc_cmd --project_attach www.worldcommunitygrid.org 5c49427099355a7f18c279978f37871c However - you now say that it will not connect to WCG. Can you provide the messages that indicate this? One thing you can check is what version of BOINC are you running? We require the 5.2 or higher client due to our use of SSL for communications. thanks, Kevin |

Just curious but can you run the command:
ping www.worldcommunitygrid.org After running this command please paste what you get from it. If it says host not found, then try: ping 129.33.89.133 If this still fails, then please try to ping another website: ping yahoo.com This is to check that the computer is connected to the internet. -Uplinger |

Can you run the commands again and paste the results? Also, please include the ping statement along with the results.

Uchiha Itachi,
Does your system sit behind a firewall that prevents access through port 443? The World Community Grid uses this port for ssl connections with the BOINC server. Also, did you possibly configure BOINC to use a proxy when one doesn't exist or improper settings on your proxy? Also, do you have any other machines that are on the same network as this machine that can connect to the World Community Grid servers using BOINC? -Uplinger |
