Hello everyone. I managed to mess up my BOINC installation somehow, and I can no longer get WCG units. Hopefully someone has seen this before. here is the story:
About a week ago BOINC went nuts while processing a WCG unit. It produced a 115 gigabyte stderr file and eventually filled up my disk. I hunted down where the disk space had gone and deleted the files in the slot directory that were causing the problems (the system was unusable, I had no choice but to delete the files). Since then, BOINC reports an insufficient disk space error whenever it contacts the server for more work. There is over 100 gig free on the disk so space is not an issue. I tried resetting the project, as well as detatching and reattaching, to no avail. It claims it needs 100 meg more disk space, so I even tried deleting some files to trick it. That did not work either. I do not want to reinstall because I have made some considerable progress on some climate WUs that I do not want to lose. Any ideas how I can fix this? |

I suspect your client_state.xml file became corrupted.
First run the benchmarks (commands->run benchmarks). That should force it to check the real available space. If that doesn't work, have a look in the file and see if there's anything untoward. |

I tried running the diagnostics, no joy. There is nothing obviously messed up in the client XML, it appears to have the proper values for the size of the disk and the free space. I even tried dropping the project, removing every file that had WCG in the name and reattaching. It is still remembering that I do not have sufficient disk space.

OK, I got it to work. Somehow, my global preferences were limited to 1 gig of disk space. climateprediction was taking up almost a gig by itself. I had to log in to Rosetta's web site to change my preferences, then force an update to the Rosetta site, then force an update to the WCG site, and now it works again.
BOINC works in mysterious ways. I saw no way to set these prefs through WCG. Do they exist? |

You can get to your global preferences from this page:
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/viewProfiles.do They are below the UD profiles. Kevin |

Hello osprey,
I have never run across this before. My first guess is that something went wrong on the BOINC side rather than the project side. Would you consider uninstalling BOINC, then rebooting with a checkdisk (Start | Run | chkdsk /F) to fix any cross-linked disk sectors, then re-installing BOINC? Lawrence |
