I'm running 3 desktops & 1 laptop. All 4 computers have internet access. I have one desktop that BOINC has stopped working on. I can't get it to connect no matter what I do. I've even uninstalled the program, redownloaded & reinstalled. I keep getting the same error. Unable to connect. I have no trouble using the WCG agent on this computer. The desktop is a Gateway P4 1.7ghz, 1gb of ram, 80gb hard drive. My internet connection is via cable modem.

First of all, what OS?
Are you getting this error from BOINC Manager, or does it appear in the messages view? If it's in the messages view, please will you paste the relevant lines for us to see? If the error is from BOINC Manager, then it may be an RPC problem, or you could have another BOINC instance running. |

I'm sorry. Windows XP Home SP2. The program won't connect no matter what I do. I get the message to click on File/Select Computer then type localhost. When I do this it automatically puts in a password. When I do a window pops up stating it can't connect would you like to try again. I click yes I get the same message.

I figured out what was causing the problem. But I don't why it caused the problem. The other day I installed AOL 9.0 Security Edition. I just unistalled it & BOINC is working fine now. ???????????

BOINC uses RPC to communicate between BOINC Manager and the BOINC client running in the background. AOL (in its usual incompetence) is presumably blocking it - either by disabling RPC, or by blocking the port that BOINC uses. RPC stands for "Remote Procedure Call" and is a common method of inter-process communication.

Thanks for everything. I think I'll just leave AOL off that computer. Have a good day.

A wise choice.
But make sure you have at least basic firewall and anti-virus protection. There are plenty of free options. |

That's not a problem. I have the Mcafee Suite loaded on all my computers.

Ah, that could have been the problem to start with. Security programs don't play nice together, and Norton and McAfee in particular ALWAYS cause headaches if they are forced to share.
Glad you've got it sorted. |

AOL uses Mcafee. I bought the Suite I use because AOL's versions are just basic.
