Is this a recent problem? Was it working before? |

Reboot doesn't help...re-install didn't help either. No idea...defaulted back to the original FAAH client and decided to support protein folding and misfolding with the other half of the CPU being I'm running dual core system.
Sometimes errors in windors just don't make any sense to me. Windows is built like a brick sh!t house with every other brick missing :p In short I tried everything that was suggested in the help section and nothing worked. |

I didn't realize anything was wrong until I checked my CPU usage and seen 0% which I do on a regular basis as a safe guard to make sure everything is running the way it should. Then I open up BOINC and all the text boxes were blank to include the history of what happened.
Noticed the stats on the website are down a bit...wonder if anyone else had these problems and didn't realize it ? No idea...but thought you guys should know. |

Nothing wrong.....BOINC history shows multiple connects to fetch work and return results yesterday and today, april 30. Notably, WCG is since a few days sluggish or not responding, but that could be IE7 Beta. On Opera as normal very responsive.
----------------------------------------On global stats, no comment as Saturday was typical for a weekend day, and to use StarTrek lingo 'within parameters' of about 28 million points...... many company pc's shut down or the more vigorous browsing at home ![]()

Could be my computer...very likely. I got a ton of junk running on this thing..more then I know what to do with to include IE7 beta.
Not only that...I write my own visual basic chat bot programs. The failure of BOINC accured overnight while one of my Yahoo Chat bots programs was running. I don't know how that would relate but I suspect that could likely be the cause if nobody else reports problems. Just don't know why a re-install didn't work and had the same errors ? |

This problem is normally caused by microsoft. They are sitting on one of the ports assigned to BOINC. The next version of BOINC will use a different port and should handle a blocked port slightly better.
Workarounds: 1) Wait until the windows start up process is finished and try again. 2) Try using the select computer option under advanced with both fields blank. 3) Reinstall as a service. The deamon will be running even if you are unable to get the manager to communicate with it. |

BOINC uses RPC to communicate between BOINC Manager and the actual boinc program. Normally, BOINC Manager will launch boinc, then try and communicate with it over RPC. If the RPC service isn't working, if the port is blocked, or if boinc failed to launch properly, then you will get the message you see. Finally, you will get a similar problem if BOINC Manager is trying to connect to the wrong computer, or with the wrong password. These settings are in File->Select Computer. You want localhost, and the password is in gui_rpc_auth.cfg
So, you can do several things to try and debug this situation: a) check the RPC service. Is it running normally? b) check your firewall software. Is it doing anything stupid? (It shouldn't block localhost, but you never know.) c) launch boinc.exe from the command line, and see what messages it displays. Let us know how it goes. |
