I have been trying to figure out which program I should run, BOINC or UD. I just run world community grid specifically on BOINC and it runs through two WU at a time. However, I know this has to be rechecked for errors eventually. UD runs only one WU at a time but doesn't need to be checked. Now if you look at the system process tree it shows about 50% of my processing power going to each WU. This is true for both BOINC and UD, therefore BOINC is using 100% about of my processor while UD is only 50%. So is BOINC the better option for me, or is this an impossible question to answer. I've been looking at the forums for awhile and couldn't find an answer to this question. I'd appreciate any help that you could give me.

BOINC is best.
Not for the reasons you suggest, though. If you have a multicore or SMP setup, then you are doing twice the work with BOINC. If you have hyperthreading, then Task Manager is lying to you, and you are barely doing more than you would be if you only ran one work unit at once. Work units from BOINC and UD are checked. The difference is that BOINC only grants credit after checking - and if the work unit validates against the others. UD grants credit immediately. But BOINC is better - it is more configurable, more efficient, and more easily troubleshooted. |
