BOINC suddenly won't connect to localhost

My laptop has been quite happily crunching away BOINC for the past year when it suddenly stopped crunching will not connect to the localhost. I have tried re-booting, letting it cool down and restored Windows XP to an earlier time but it still refuses to connect.

Is there anything else I could try before I uninstall BOINC Manager and re-install it again.

If anyone else has experienced this sudden behaviour, your advice would be appreciated. sad

Re: BOINC suddenly won't connect to localhost

A checklist for you:

1. Have you installed any updates or new software recently?
2. Have you noticed anything in your firewall or security centre logs that might indicate activity is being blocked?
3. Check that the RPC service is working. Look in Control Panel / Administrative Tools.
4. Check no ghost processes are causing problems (rebooting should have ruled this out).

If all this fails, please will you post the precise error you are getting? Thanks.

Re: BOINC suddenly won't connect to localhost

Everything seems to be in order from all those points you stated.

Here is a rundown of the precise error ...

I'm using Boinc 5.4.9.
On my system tray it's saying that 'BOINC Manager is not currently connected to a BOINC Client.'
When I try to connect it tells me that it's unable to connect to localhost and would I like to try again.
I click on 'advanced' in BOINC Manager and select the computer and enter 'localhost', hit 'enter' but it still won't connect.
At the moment there is no data on any of the screens in BOINC Manager and it states that it is disconnected.

That's about all the information I have.

The curious thing about this is that everything has been working fine up until now and nothing has been changed on my 'puter as I only use it for crunching and leave it running 24/7. It just suddenly stopped crunching.

Funnily enough, this machine is still visible on BoincView as 'running' but the % done is stuck. I can only assume from this that my log files are still visible to Boinc View.

Thanx for the help.

PS ... I've also tried repairing Boinc but to no avail. sad

Re: BOINC suddenly won't connect to localhost

Okay.

When you select the host, does the password fill in with password mask characters?

If you open Task Manager and go to the Process tab, do you see these processes?

boinc.exe
boincmgr.exe
wcg_faah_autodock*.exe
wcg_hpf_rosetta*.exe
services.exe

Have you just started using BOINCView?

Re: BOINC suddenly won't connect to localhost

Thanx D..

When you select the host, does the password fill in with password mask characters?

Yes
If you open Task Manager and go to the Process tab, do you see these processes?
boinc.exe
boincmgr.exe
wcg_faah_autodock*.exe
wcg_hpf_rosetta*.exe
services.exe

The only processes showing are:
boincmgr.exe
and
services.exe

The others are missing

Have you just started using BOINCView?

I've been using this on my main machine to monitor everything for nearly one year without any problems.

This thing has really got me baffled.

Re: BOINC suddenly won't connect to localhost

Well, now we know exactly what's going wrong - BOINC isn't starting. But why?

Try starting boinc.exe from a command prompt, then connect BOINC Manager.

Seriously, the most likely culprit is your security software. There have been confirmed issues with AOL Security Center and McAfee VirusScan. What do you use?

Re: BOINC suddenly won't connect to localhost

Martle, something must have changed, as you speak of 5.4.9. which has only been there for a month or so. Mine would not properly 'talk' until the RPC service was re-activated and permitted in the firewall, port 31416 (default since recently) and legacy 1043 and further 443 are also involved. Since i added the last port for BOINC.EXE and BOINCMGR.exe i no longer have random freezing of BOINC (not the science) due the firewall/antivir combination. The way i picture it is, that the set of 3 or 4 in your case with BOINCview sort of 'network' with each other inside a single computer (layman's view).

Re: BOINC suddenly won't connect to localhost

Got it working OK again now.

I bit the bullet and uninstalled it and re-installed it again. It's a bit of a mystery why it suddenly went bannanas but everything is working fine again now.

Thanx for all your help guys. wink

Re: BOINC suddenly won't connect to localhost

In the future, don't just click on the "Exit" under the "File" heading. You will also have to go into your "Task Manager" (Ctrl-Alt-Del) & end all Boinc processes. Then startup Boinc again from the "Start Menu". Boinc like many programs sometimes does NOT start up properly & no matter what you try to do, it just won't go. I have found that by doing what's described above, I can always get Boinc to start if it fails to connect.

Re: BOINC suddenly won't connect to localhost

Charlie C, that killing of the science processes, if you implied that, has a great risk of damaging the WU and loose it. In my case, killing BOINC.EXE only and restarting it would make it reconnect to the science background processes, temporarily. As mentioned also by DiDactylos, it's the Firewall/Antivir combo and or config, probably stopping the connect.

Martle's, if it's now working proper, dont fix what's working wink, otherwise.....WTYS cool
