I'm trying to use the BOINC client on a Linux machine of mine. I just installed it, started the client, and started the manager. The client finished the CPU benchmark and then I added WCG project. Problem is it isn't listing any tasks and for the project it says "communication deferred ######" where #### is some amount of time. I've waited for that to count down but then it just does it again.
Any ideas? |

Please will you copy the entire message output for us? That would help us a lot.
Meanwhile, here's a checklist of potential problems: Check your firewall Do you use a proxy? Are you using the official build of one of the stable releases? Does the computer have more than 250 MB of physical memory? |

I fixed the problem of not getting tasks. The system was low on RAM. Added some more and now it gets a task.
Now a new problem. It errors while trying to run the task. Fri Jun 23 18:07:54 2006|World Community Grid|Unrecoverable error for result faah0654_d423cb311_x1hpv_05_1 (process got signal 11) The machine has 256MB of RAM, 4gigs, connected to the net behind a router (functional, I'm posting from it now), and running Darn* Small Linux 2.4 from the harddrive. Any ideas what's up? I'm running a Windows client for WCG on another machine without any problems. |

It sounds like the BOINC "leave application in memory while preempted" bug. Try changing this preference to avoid the problem recurring.
Not everyone experiences this bug, and other projects besides WCG have trouble with it. We keep hearing it's fixed, but.... :-( |

Not everyone experiences this bug, and other projects besides WCG have trouble with it. We keep hearing it's fixed, but.... :-( You have to link the science application with the 5.4.9 BOINC client libraries. There was a statement that the latest BOINC client fixed the problem (not 100% sure where that statement came from). This was misleading becuase although it was fixed with the 5.4.9 release, the science applications need to be re-compiled and linked to these libraries. The Help Defeat Cancer project was implemented after the 5.4.9 were released and so it has the fix. We will be releasing a new version of FightAIDS@Home science application linked with the 5.4.9 in the not too distant future which will then also include the fix. However, depending on the science application this problem occurs more or less frequenly. FightAIDS@Home experiences this bug very infrequently and as a result our time was directed at launching the Help Defeat Cancer project and spending time investigating the problems with Human Protoeme Folding - Phase 2 (which is linked to the 5.4.9 libs). |

Hi,
I have absolutely no idea what fixed it, but it seems to have cleared itself up. Thanks for the reply anyway... I think it might have been something to do with the fact that my power cord had become unplugged and it was refusing to do anything but hey im probably wrong... |

No, I think you're right. BOINC has a setting "run while on batteries" which defaults to "no". I don't advise changing this setting, but it's there if you need it. Access it through My Grid/Device Manager on the website.
