hard disk dying, cant clone windows arghhhh

my hard disk is on the way out, not dead yet but sounds sick, i have tried to clone it over to a new hard disk without succes so far, am not sure wot ( if anything) i am doing wrong, possibly oem windows xp wont let you clone?? maybe i have missed a step? i am trying to use norton ghost to clone, it said copy is ok but it wont boot... any ideas??

of course yet another purchase of windows would be annoying waste of $ arghh, then the cascading / flowon effects, ie norton ghost / antivirus / firewall and partition majic etc etc may or may not work on new disk :(

i will ring both msoft and symantc on monday but in the meantime i have put linux on a disk to keep something going,, at least i can use the net , email im and WCG.. any ideas? cheers..

I have an idea... you're already headed in the right direction. You've already got Linux on the new disk. Forget about Windoze, it's crap. If you bother to call M$oft at all just tell them you've switched to Linux and won't be needing their junk anymore.

much as i would delight to argue with you i am leaning more and more towards linux, i burnt an iso of the latest ubuntu 1/2 hr ago, i am just waiting for this w/u to complete on this puter then i will install ( i put ubuntu 5.10 ) on 2 days ago but still cant print, i will try this newer one and play around with other stuff, it recoginises flash drives and does a few more things ok so i will pursue linux further and see how i go, i must admit i only put linux on my 3rd puter cos i not want to spend more $ on msoft, it would really gall me if i have to buy another xp for the SAME computer arghhh, i am trying top avoid that... doh... next try is to go for suse 10 . 95% of my time on the puter is net / email / im so even the worst linux distro can manage that, it is the more fancy things i need to come to termswith eg my new scanner/fax/printer etc

a hard disk is gonna fail sooner or later so perhaps an OS that wont tie me to a particular hard drive is in order, ie LINUX , cheers keep up the entertaining and informative comment.. hmm 85% on hpf2 current workunti. about an hr or 2 away from new linux install

hmmm i saw an article about putting a bootable windows copy on a memory stick.....if your windows copy is legal, there's no reason whatsoever for you to have to buy a new one, even if OEM. The machine should have come with a recovery disk....mine did and happily transposed to a new drive......nevertheless, not withstanding, once i have a second home machine (aspire to have a turbo laptop for wifi browsing on the terazza), the desktop will get a linux introduction, the hard way if need be.

Re: hard disk dying, cant clone windows arghhhh

retep57,

I've declared August 1 to be L Day here. That's Linux Day. On that day I am going to remove Windoze from all my computers. They all dual-boot now and I've been working out various hardware issues and learning. On L Day Windoze is history for me, no more dual-boot after that. From that day on, come hell or high water, I live with Linux and I will learn to work around any problems that come up just as I have learned to work around problems with Windoze. You'll eventually find the drivers/whatever you need for your all-in-one. Then you're one step closer to your L Day too biggrin

Re: hard disk dying, cant clone windows arghhhh

well as a newbie i am struggling, i have not been able to get my printer working in linux flavours.. i might transfer the printer to my working xp machinein the other room, ubuntu older version was ok for general browsing etc i tried to upgrade to the latest ubuntu but get a login screen and then nothing beyond that, hmm it has to be idiot proof for me and for me to try and recommend for others, then i tried fedora core 4 , two different dvd's (pressed ) both fell over arghh, then i have put on and old suse , 9.3 works but "feels" slow runs sluggeshly, i will finsih current work units then get rid of suse 9.3, will put old ubuntu on until i get something better. ironically the suse 10.1 that i am chasing was on last months coverdisks, of course they are gone, doh, anyway will do sooner or later main thing is keep crunching but would be nice to "just use it" if no joy i might have to eat humble pie and reinstall ( try!) windows arghhh..

this might be a good chance top play around a bit more serioulsy with linux as so far i have only setup boinc wcg and left it to run in the background.. cheers
