Just wondering if anyone here is lucky enough to have a Conroe CPU up and running on the WCG? With all the hype about them I would like to see how fast they really are in real life applications like HPF2, FAAH, etc. Since FAAH WU's are the most consistant, what CPU time do they average on your rig? On my 2.8GHz A64 they average 3.8-4.2 hours.

I've never seen a work unit take more than 3 hours on my conroe. It's a E6600 overclocked modestly at 3.2Ghz, though I've seen many people reach 3.6-4.2Ghz on better boards.
Maybe it's just because I'm not at the computer most of the time? I'll set my profile to deal exclusively with FAAH work units tomorrow, since I'll be home. My UD client is maxed out at 300 points, bummer. I guess I'll try BOINC, it should give me better pointage. |

Hi Orca,
BOINC will also give you a Results Status page that will let you see the times on all the work units you return for several days. I have been hearing guesses that a Conroe will be a third faster than an Athlon 64 for any given Mhz rating. It would be interesting to hear what you get. Lawrence |

Nice rig! Yes, you should definitely switch to BOINC, not only will it take advantage of your dual core CPU and double the number of WU's you crunch per day, it will also give you more points per WU since BOINC doesn't have a cap on your system strength. You should be able to generate 6-7000 points/day with that machine!
----------------------------------------![]() Another nice feature of BOINC is that all your results status are stored here on the website in "my grid". So you can easily check how long each WU took to complete and see if your machine is producing any errors. I usually don't upgrade my computer until I can buy double the processing power I currently have. It looks like a Conroe running at 4GHz would probably do it..... very, very tempting! ![]() ![]() |

Whilst the 'Result Status' page at WCG is very is helpful to track current WU's, the quorum, status etc up to 4 days after completion, BOINCView as an add-on to BOINC, keeps a log of WU's returned/finished, their CPU time and Local time returned...go and have a look at http://boincview.amanheis.de/. It's multilingual as BOINC is. It got multi computer management features too and much more including it telling you when BOINC is planned to perform the next benchmark ;>). There's BOINCStudio too, but not going to recommend it (yet)!

Sekerob, neat stuff, but it doesn't appear to work for me - it refuses to connect to my boinc client.
For the benchmarking routine, I have set the client's priority to realtime (at most it will hog one core during benchmarking) so that no matter when, it will always use the whole core for benchmarking. Hmmm... from 1 hour of work on my conroe 3.2ghz I get roughly 16 credits. So, for 48 hours of work, I get 768 credits. What does that translate to in points? My work units have never taken more than 2 hours to run each since I overclocked. Some are reporting within an hour, most around an hour and a half. But one thing to note is that the boinc benchmark for conroe is not very impressive, comparing to other posted benchmark results, it's being bested by quite afew amds, and is comparable even to my P4's benches until I OC'ed it. It's a severe discrimination. Boinc needs to add benchmark optimizations for this new generation of processors running EMT64 and SSE4 before it can shows its' true colours. I'm surprised even a AMD 4200+ has better boinc benches than a stock-clocked conroe which supercedes the 5000+ at almost every other benchmark in existence by a margin of 15-25%. I estimate the margin of error of the boinc bench for conroe's performance to be over 30%. In other words, its not receiving the credit it should get. Of course, it might just be me pouting. So, if you're looking for points, conroe is not the way to go. If you're looking for results and daily performance across the spectrum, it is. |

Orca, for BOINCview you have to create 'remote_hosts.cfg' file containing the exact name of your computer as known on your the network or the IP address, even if client is on same machine as BOINC plus a password file 'gui_rpc_auth.cfg' for security. Place these files in the BOINC directory of each computer. Select connect via network option. Bring up the Location option in BOINC per below and complete with the password you chose to put in the gui....cfg file.
----------------------------------------![]() More Help can be found in the 'unofficial BOINC Wiki' http://boinc-wiki.ath.cx/index.php?title=Boin...allation_and_Set-Up_Guide Also see for discussion http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/addpost?parent=61109 Someone else may respond to your benchmark discrimination perceptions....new kid on the block always stands back until there are enough new kids ![]() ciao
