Mac Mini stopped / suspended processing over the weekend.

I am running BOINC on a Mac Mini. It has been running happily for a couple of months. When I leave, I have it display the login screen but do not log out. BOINC has been crunching along at night and over weekends just fine up until last weekend. BOINC appears to have suspended activity all weekend. It is crunching away now.

The only unusual thing is that the work unit that downloaded Friday afternoon preempted the running faah ~ 1 1/2 hours from completion. Due to memory limits, faahs seem to be all that I can run on this machine. Naturally the preempting faah has a deadline of this morning before I got in.

Any ideas as to what happened or what I can do to avoid a repeat?

The machine is on a UPS and I did not have a power failure over the weekend.

Have a UPS and had a fraction of second power drop on Sunday causing BOINC to go in pause and not resume. It was 5 seconds into a HDC. WXP btw. Closed BOINC completely, restarted upon which it resumed at 0 seconds. I have pre-empting on.

As to the 'Too Late', u were certainly still within the grace period of force majeure and should have gotten credit. If the recipient of the 4th copy reads his results status file, he will realize that it has become superfluous and cancel.

I'll have a look at BOINC dev forum if anyone else has observed this.

cheers

Ah, any throttle features on your MiniMac? I use Threadmaster, which i know if it gets interrupted, will hang BOINC.

Also did the crunching actually stop or had BOINCmgr lost contact with the Core client?

Re: Mac Mini stopped / suspended processing over the weekend.

No throttle on the machine. It is used mostly as a smart terminal with email and occasional DVD or CD burning.

We have a big USP for the big machines. I get emails for power bumps from it. Nothing over the weekend. That doesn't rule one out but I have had power bumps while I was here and BOINC kept going.

BOINC was running when I checked Friday evening. The preempting faah arrived about 1 1/2 hours after I left. This morning it showed 4 1/2 hours CPU time. I did not restart BOINC. The preempting faah is still running. I plan to let it complete. It claims to need another 8 1/2 hours.

I changed the Activity to "always run" from "run based on preferences". (How do you change or display preferences?) I checked the time before going to lunch and brought up the login screen. It ran normally while I was out. I have it set to not take new work and will let both jobs end then reboot and try again.

Re: Mac Mini stopped / suspended processing over the weekend.

Could not locate anything mentioning for a process to just stop completely in its track....if the BOINC agent shows normal responsiveness, it might be a thing to report, with device ID, WU number BOINC version and message log file.

Some general and scheduling preferences can be set in the device profile in 'My Grid' http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/viewProfiles.do. Once done, hit the Update button in the projects tab of BOINC.

I'm a bit at odds with what you mean with preempting...language barrier. It's referred to if switching between projects after an fixed time frame of e.g. 4 hours and if BOINC is instructed to keep the interrupted job in memory when paused (see prefs u can set in previous para). Your first post suggests it was interrupted, your second post implies its running without your intervention?

BOINC has some mysterious ways......it froze again hanging on my firewall today requiring for latter to be closed temporarily.....no messages at all.....shortly i'll be away for an extended period.... little trust it will be running when i come back.

cheers

I found the problem. It seems our BOFH changed the power management settings.
