confused faulty BOINC linux version download

I've downloaded the linux version and follow the installation carefully. But this is result instead of the next step:

./boinc_5.8.16_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh

gunzip: stdin: unexpected end of file
tar: Read 10102 bytes from -
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

The binary is faulty in the BOINC folder, and can not be executed. What happened? How do we fix this? I've tried to download it twice. Please for the advise.

Re: faulty BOINC linux version download

Hi rona_dinihari,

hmmmm EOF as in Unexpected End Of File suggests a faulty download. Here the direct download link from Berkeley:

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_5.8.16_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh

Make sure you have permissions to the location you place the download and enough space.... it's not a lot like 6mb before expanding. Also the location it's installed too needs enough space, but doubt it's an issue.

You don't tell what Linux (will you please). There is some discussion of using Synaptic to pull the application from a repository for smoother integration. Here one thread which touches on the system: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=13477#100191

Hopefully our Linux expert will come on line to help you along if further assistance is needed.

cheers

Re: faulty BOINC linux version download

Sounds like the problem is at your end, then.

How are you trying to download the file?

Re: faulty BOINC linux version download

Easy starting point: The file should be 4248839 bytes. If you do
"sum boinc_5.8.16_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh", you should get "32309 4150".
If any of these is not true, your download is failing or you're getting a different file to the one on boinc.berkeley.edu.

Also, open the file in a text editor and have a look at it. Often when this happens, you have downloaded a proxy error page.
