Communication deferred

Hi, I'm having a problem with the client now fetching new tasks or reporting old ones. When I click "update" on the project, I get "Scheduler request pending, requested by user. Communication deferred 23:59:30"

Here is a list of my messages, if you look at the last 2 lines you will see there was a time of 7 1/2 minutes between my resquests to update. I've been trying for over a day now (I have 3 tasks that have been uploaded & are now ready to report, and my last task has only got 10 minutes to go ... the system should have requested new tasks by now.

Any ideas?
Tx,
Peter

Re: Communication deferred

If I remember correctly, BOINC so you can't DDoS the project servers. Every time you hit Update you contact the scheduler server. Now think of you and 9 other people doing this constantly for an hour. No one else would be able to get through.

Again, if I remember correctly, if you do it to often, you can not do an update until the deferred time comes down to 0.

However, BOINC will try to upload results that are finished automatically and should download new work with it.

Re: Communication deferred

Hi Stuart,

I hear you, but the reason I have been clicking on "Update" is because the system hasn't been requesting new work by itself ... it's never NOT requested work before. Also, why would it be deferred for 24 hours? (well 23:59:30)

Regards,
Peter

Peter,

I don't know why the 24 hours but I would guess that there is some sort of algorithm that backs off all the time when communications cannot be achieved.

As for no work, what projects are you assigned to ? Have a look here to find out.

If you are only using Discovering Dengue Drugs - Together, then you may not be getting any work due to the changes made to DDDT Single Redundancy.

Re: Communication deferred

pmbellis,

Since you have no work, try doing Project Reset (select WCG in Projects tab of BOINCmgr and hit the Reset button in left margin). Think the control parms in BOINC went wonky.

And given there is the line with the "override" appearing, do a Local Prefs clearing (advanced menu, preferences, clear). This ensures only one set of prefs from the website is used.

Once things work, you can toy with the local prefs again to hearts content.

ciao

[Added: Stuarts observation is also very plausible. 1 core working and one idle. Particular single project crunchers are advised to select the "If there is no work available ..." option in case the prime project goes dry]

Re: Communication deferred

If I reset, what will hapen to the 4 completed tasks that are in "ready to Report" status?

Oh, and I'm subscribed to all the projects available.

Re: Communication deferred

Well, better not with 4 Ready to Report still to clear. Visit your My Grid > Device Manager > Device profile as it oddly says "2008/07/29 08:16:29 PM||Host location: none". The Device Manager should indicate at least "Default" as associated. Edit that one or whichever linked, make sure to tick the "if no work... " alternate work box and save. Then, hit update in BOINCmgr.

Still think your parms are somewhere wonky if this does not kick it.

A reset is a very drastic step and will abort any Work Units/Results in progress, including those that have been completed.

Re: Communication deferred

Sekerob, just a brief aside: the BOINC client reports the default profile as "Host location: none". This is normal. Technically speaking, the "default" profile isn't associated with a venue element in the preferences file.

Re: Communication deferred

Forget the default profile. That was pure UD. Instead create a standard Boinc of Home and associate that profile.....
