confused inconclusive results

Looks like a whole batch (the lv50700068 group) has returned with inconclusive results across all replications / WUs. How does this happen? What might it mean about the particular piece of work? Just curious.

Re: inconclusive results

That's a sweeping claim. What do you base it on?

Remember, if there is a problem with a single copy, all replications will be marked inconclusive until an extra copy completes.

Problems with work units are reported automatically to the techs, but early reports from members are always welcome.

Re: inconclusive results

Oh, so out of the 19, lets say 12 or so have returned, and there are a few still in progress.. and one error. All 12 would be marked inconclusive until..well I guess that's my question. Until what?

Re: inconclusive results

When another result is returned, the work unit is queued for validation. Exactly what the validator does varies by project, but basically it needs a minimum number of valid work units before it can mark them all valid and the others invalid, and calculate credit.

Note that if the work unit marked error has zero runtime, it is very likely it was aborted.

Thanks for the explanation. This is just the first job I've had that showed this result after about 140+ CPU days of completed WUs. Usually when I view my "pending validation" completed jobs, I see all of the replications also listed as pending, or in progress. I hadn't seen the inconclusive before.

I also read something in another thread that seemed to indicate that "inconclusive" seemed more likely to turn to "invalid" result. Maybe I misread that, or misunderstood the context.

Re: inconclusive results

The "inconclusive" status is transient - you have to catch it at the right time, between the first validation attempt and the successful validation attempt.

"Inconclusive" means at least one copy is invalid, but unless there is a problem with the work unit, the rest will be valid.

Re: inconclusive results

I had one (lw675_ 00046_ 18--) return as inconclusive as well. In fact, I've seen quite a few results from the HPF project return as inconclusive. I think I'm going to take myself off from this project as inconclusive results is a waste of my computer time. I'm a person who likes results!

Re: inconclusive results

Unless you really have problems with your machine (but in this case you would probably get "error" directly) you need not worry about inconclusive results, they will become valid once one or more extra results from peers will have allowed the validator process to find if your result about which it is still uncertain is really valid or in error.
This temporary status is a normal consequence of the HPF2 project where all distributed WUs of a given quorum are slightly different so that each of them brings useful (not duplicated) information to the scientists.

Cheers. Jean.
