Could you be arrested for allowing your 5'th grade child to ride her bike one mile to school? That certainly seems crazy as we try to encourage active life styles for our kids. That certainly seems crazy as we try to promote safe routes to school programs. That certainly seems crazy as we talk of an obesity epidemic amongst our children. But that is what police in Elizabethton Tennessee are threatening. http://bikewalktn.blogspot.com/2011/08/arrested-for-riding-bike-to-school.html

BUT IF the District was setup with bike trails, crossing guards, etc, etc, etc then yes I can see allowing kids to ride their bikes to School. ![]() ![]() |

Just goes to show what a 'nanny state' we're all being forced to live in nowadays...

The article is questionable. The article states that the officer deemed the route unsafe but doesn't state why. The person writing the article only ever got statements from the mother of the child. Even accounts of what the authorities supposedly said are secondhand from the mother.
There are rather large gaps in this story. |

If there were no laws being broken and the child was riding responsibly then this cop needs to get a life or find another line of work. Just another example of the ongoing intrusion into parental rights.

Actually that is why they make Courts, for the mother, for example, to not just pay the ticket but go to Court and explain why the Officer was wrong. If she can make her case well enough the Judge will throw out the Officers judgement and the ticket. ![]() ![]() |

Cops are there to enforce laws, not harass law abiding citizens or their children. This cop is a jerk.

if this is the law; then, it sounds like anouther law created by a x-community organizer to control your way of life.
----------------------------------------But on the other hand what would of happened IF the child was abducted or worst. Is the parent responsible or would you blame the cop's? [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Sep 18, 2011 11:07:25 AM] |

Is the parent responsible or would you blame the cop's? This is management or control of a society by Fear. Agreed, even the most horrible and terrible things have a certain non null probability to happen. But because there is a small probability should we gear all our way of living in a way that even the most less probable but terribly horrible thing could absolutely not happen. I am not willing to live in this way. There is a certain risk level and price to pay for freedom in the very general sense. ![]() |
