Re: BOINC appears stuck

Have you changed your power settings in Win XP not to power anything down to save energy? You shold have it running at Max performance settings.

Which work units were running that took almost 12 hours? By the way...if I'm not mistaking...this is a pretty old laptop. Work will probably run that long or longer. http://www.cnet.com/laptops/lenovo-thinkpad-r50e-1834/4507-3121_7-31217991.html

Re: BOINC appears stuck

Hi Coleslaw

Now there's an idea...I run this 99% of the time on mains since the battery is sooooo old it has a max life of approx 90 mins - less with brightness up and wifi on...I'll try max performance settings in XP and see what happens.

BTW it IS an old laptop - I've had it approx 8 years - and it still runs!!! I used to fold on it about 6 years ago (username physio), when I found that the units typically ran slightly slower than my desktop PC. Both pieces of hardware are still in use - the only difference is that my desktop (main workhorse) now runs Linux Ubuntu 12.04.

BTW Previously average time per result was 8 hours then under XP, whereas now under Ubuntu is 7h30. Obviously the unit contents has changed over the years, but it is still a big shout from the 14-22 hours estimated for each work unit at present.

I'll put the settings on max and post back when I have something conclusive (or not!)

Many thanks again for your thoughts and replies.

This is certainly a helpful and friendly forum!

I'm surprised that after 8 years that the battery still works at all. You should also attach it to QCN since it is an IBM and it may actually work without any extra equipment. Some IBM laptops did and it is a non-CPU intensive program that would run alongside your WCG work units.

Lots of laptops of accelerometers, but last I looked QCN had only some 1100 devices reporting data. It really takes on my HP about 0.01% of CPU time to run this.
