vina problems

i have noticed the vina counters are re-setting every 1:50 elapsed to 0:00 and to go time resets to ~56:00 and percent completed changes also. it may be just a timing thing. but i seem to have a problem completing vina tasks.

Re: vina problems

I am having the same issue. My PC has an AMD processor. No package ever completes.

Re: vina problems

I was having the same problem but it was fixed with Vina 7.06 tasks, if your tasks are Vina 7.03 then abort them and try out the new level of tasks.

Re: vina problems

Has anyone else set a download speed and notice it doesn't seem to stay withing the limits. I thought I saw 116KB/s when it was set for 20KB/s. I double checked the machine and CEP2 seems to be following the download and upload speed caps. I have seen this on a couple machines now and I am just starting to run these as I am just finishing my CEP2 goal.

Re: vina problems

There's the on-the-fly compress that may be fooling you. If there's 80%+ zipping between routers, the real file size is 5x and more. When the CEP2 result goes up [file suffix _4], that's an actual zip going up client to server.

Not related to being anything of Vina ;>)

edit: Think routers don't even try to compress the compressed, but in a nutshell, BOINC limit's the BW to what goes out, after compression and comes in before decompression.

Re: vina problems

Thanks for the info Sekerob. I haven't seen this before on any of the other applications and thought it was odd. If I see it again I will try to confirm it is do to compression with bandwidth monitoring in the router. It has been a bit of a struggle lately trying to run VOIP with CEP2 uploads on several machines.

I thought for a second i saw a double post... not sure what happened there. Thanks again

Re: vina problems

Only issue I've run into recently vina WUs is it seems like they don't play nice with CEP2 WUs at the same time. I hit that this morning where on my quad core laptop I was running two vina WUs and two CEP2 WUs at the same time - my laptop was running way too hot and the fan was running like crazy. So I suspended the two vina WUs and started up two autodock WUs and laptop is much quieter now.

I guess I'll have to track this issue more over the weekend and see if this is a consistent pattern. If so, when I run my CEP2 WUs on the weekends, I may have to go after some other workload to run with it instead if the autodock WUs are not available. I know experiment 41 is coming to a close soon (seeing AutoDock WUs now in the series 45004, 45029), so if we only have FAAH vina jobs soon, this may become more of an issue to deal with.

Re: vina problems

I too have noticed a problem with the Vina projects and CEP2, but only on the Linux systems. They coexist peacefully on the windows systems(Win 7 Ultimate 64 and Vista). The Linux systems run the Vina jobs flawlessly if they only run Vina and not anything else. On Linux For the most part Vina and Autodock work well together(Autodock jobs occasionally hang, but eventually finish successfully.) I never have figured out why, but just try to run what works on the various machines.
Cheers

Re: vina problems

Well, my laptop did settle down after awhile, and also did some VINA WUs with CEP2 WUs running and the laptop was humming ok (laptop running Win 7). I suspect I know why my laptop was running so hot initially this morning with VINA and CEP WUs together. I noticed that my disk was running quite hard too, and I've seen this before with CEP2 when they first start - probably sucking a bunch of data into memory to spend the rest of the WU run crunching away. The Vina WUs were a bit aggressive on the CPU at the same time (CEP2 WUs sometimes pop up as running hard on CPU as well). So with all the CPU pumping hard and the HD spinning like crazy at the same time, my laptop was then having to do something with all that heat and thus the fan was screaming too. Once things ran for a little while, things all settled down and my laptop was OK the rest of the day. So I guess in the future on the weekends when I want to run a couple CEP2 WUs, I need to let them get loaded up first before letting loose the other two cores on any FAAH Vina WUs. biggrin
