This would take us back to 1671 and a bit, the year that Antoni van Leeuwenhoek discovered Protozoa

Dutch scientist Antoni van Leeuwenhoek pioneered the use of the microscope to make a number of important discoveries. He observed what he termed animalcules, now known as protozoa and bacteria. He confirmed the discovery of the capillaries, and demonstrated the circulation of red corpuscles through animal capillaries. Leeuwenhoek described three broad types of bacteria: bacilli, cocci, and spirilla.

Today through the World Community Grid we are able to give Scientists an even closer look at even tinier objects. From Leeuwenhoek's work medical science took another further step along, with the work being carried out here on the World Community Grid I hope we achieve the same.
