This may be the wrong place to ask this question. But I am having a lot of trouble finding the answer. I want to know if programs like this are safe for your computer. And if they have any ill effects such as eating ram or memory or anything like that. I have read a few different sights for this type of thing, and they all say its safe, but never go into any details of how or why or what is used (at least that I can find.) I would love to do this as such an easy way to donate for such an important thing, but on the other hand the reason I don't donate money is because I pretty much live hand to mouth, which means no money for a new computer if something goes wrong. So if anyone could help me dot my I's and cross my T's I would really appreciate it.

Hi RemmeM,
As far as I can recall, no user has reported that WCG software (either BOINC or the research applications) has been catastrophic for their computer, in either a hardware or software sense. If you run your machine 24/7 that will use some more electricity, but may actually be kinder on the hardware than turning it on and off daily. Some users have raised concerns that components like solid-state drives may use up their quota of writes more quickly, but SSDs tend to feature more in high-end or home-built computers. Do make sure that your machine is well ventilated and dust levels kept down, though, so as to keep internal temperatures sensible. If temperatures cause a problem, ask here again for advice on BOINC configurations that can help. Welcome to WCG! ...and make sure you interpret Scribe's humorous posts correctly ![]() |

It's installed on over 2,700,000 computers, tablets, phones etc. If there was a problem, the forums, facebook, twitter & god knows what else would be awash with people complaining.
----------------------------------------So it's pretty safe to say it's safe! ![]() |

Yes, it is safe. 684,151 members and 2,927,291 computing devices say so. You can configure it to work as you need or want. Enjoy.

Let me tell you this way: my AV don't even look inside BOINC! And check how long I've been here... ;)
