A couple of questions...

Hi, just new to this scene, running this program from F@H for a little while as part of a competition =). OK. first of all.

With F@H, i could set my CPU load limits, and set it to "only work in idle" mode, is there an option with the WCG program?

Secondly, i have a large amount of pcs, some with dual core, i used to run 2 F@H clients on each dual core machine for optimal efficiency (OCAU team, #2 in the world, chasing first =D) is there some way of doing this with the WCG?

Lastly, just a minor problem, but my machine statistics, it says i only have .98GB of space left, but this is only on my boot disk, does anyone know how to make it recognise the 500GB i have in my box atm?

Re: A couple of questions...

WCG has 2 different agents (programs) you can use for crunching: BOINC and UD (United Devices). If you have dual core machines you should consider using BOINC rather than UD.

Normally, BOINC works away in the background and uses the CPU only when other applications you are running don't need the CPU. That way BOINC continues to run and get a little work done but the application you are using gets priority so it runs at normal speed. Or you can set it to wait and go to work only after you've stopped using the CPU completely for a few minutes, like a screensaver. BOINC is available here.

I don't know what to say about your disk. It sounds like you have 2 physical disks but 1 is not being recognised? Or 2 partitions on 1 physical disk but only 1 is formatted? Can you provide more details on that, please.

Re: A couple of questions...

I agree with Dagorath, for optimal use of your dual core processors, consider migrating to BOINC. You can set it totally according to your preferences.
It is also easier to deploy BOINC when using a large amount of computers. For example, if you are using Active Directory, you can automatically install BOINC on all computers you select.

BOINC also runs on as many cores or processors as you like. So you only have to run BOINC once and it will utilize all the cores/processors which you have selected in your BOINC profile.

I think he means that the UD client indicates that there is only 0.98GB available. If you want you can change this in your Device Profile: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/viewProfiles.do
Should you migrate to BOINC, this is no longer applicable.

Re: A couple of questions...

To supplement to previous councellors, the 0.98gb is none consequential as far a crunching is concerned. UD & BOINC agents only use a fraction of that at any one time. Only with UD agent, by setting it to the maximum of 10gb will give you very slight increase in points....see the 'rating' 4 parms in your UD Agent Gui...my dif with max and default is 3 rating points....Your 'rating' will be re-calibrated/benchmarked every time you send in a completed WU!

happy crunching here.

PS BOINC (multicore parallel up to 4 WU simultaneous crunch) with BOINCview is my absolute personal fav.....no fancy graphs taking away crunch power....keeps also nice line graph stats on your daily progress in BOINC points which get translated in an 'advantages' way to WCG points....but thats secondary wink
