smile Approx. 60 hours to completion??

Hi all!

My HDC-WU is now at 4 hours/6.5% done, which means I have to crunch approx. 60 hours in total (Mac Mini Intel, Core Duo, 2GB RAM, BOINC client, non 24x7). Can this be true? If yes, I will never finish it within the 7 day deadline. Please tell me that this is a faulty progress bar smile

So what should I do? Trying to finish it and risking to go over the deadline or simply cancel the WU?

Better to watch and wait. HDC is a new project, and we don't know all that much about how it works yet.

If this is just an unusually large work unit, then I'm sure the techs will extend the deadline. Equally, if something is going wrong the techs will want to know about it.

So please, keep us updated.

Watching about 15 HDC's going by, the initial percent progress is slow on HDC (large memory build up), but rapidly accilerates past 10/15%. If your machine is on 7/24 thats Wall Clock 168 hours, before WCG sends out an extra copy for late delivery (#4). Even then there is a 7 days grace for returning. The Almost 'Too Late' will not contribute to the determination of the credit...you'd get the middle of the first 3 returned. blushing

OK, I'll try to finish the WU, posting the result here when it's done.

Ah I see...I was wondering why it took my computer about 30 mins for 3%, then finished project in 2 hours.

Well... 60 hrs seems to be a reasonable time when the client program runs in Rosetta emulation. Although it is named wcg_hdc_tma_5.05_i686-apple-darwin it isn't a Mac Intel binary (or universal). Stupid me, that I didn't check that first, but "i686-apple-darwin" for me means "universal binary" or "intel native binary"

Sorry guys, but this is a waste of valuable crunching time. I think I cancel the WU and will happily return when a universal binary is available. Any estimation when this will be?

You are correct, the Mac Intel binaries are PPC binaries, so it runs under emulation on Intel Macs, which as you know, is pretty slow.

We name the binary 'i686-apple-darwin' in order to allow Intel Mac users to participate (otherwise they don't pick up any WUs).

A universal binary is definitely on our TODO list, but I can't give you an estimate as to when it will happen.
