New [Developmental] BOINC Client v7.24.1 available

On the Berkeley BOINC site, they've released v7.24.1 of the Client this past Aug 12th for Dev Testing, if anyone is interested in testing and giving them feedback.

Clients for Windows, Android, and MacOS 10.13+

Nothing seen for Linux for some time :(

Release Notes --> https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Release_Notes
Download --> https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php

========

Changes in 7.24.1

improve implementation of CPU throttling
the default value for the "suspend_if_no_recent_input" pref is 0, not 60
if sched request fails, show the scheduler URL (that might be the problem)
Show alert if idle time to resume computing is greater than idle time to suspend computing
ignore old prefs sent by projects or AM
avoid overscheduling CPUs in presence of MT jobs
Manager: computing prefs dialog bug
Manager: Add button in event log to display only alerts (errors)
Manager: Improve consistency of control labels and accelerators
Manager: Show native names for language options, and only those for which translations are available
Android: if suspend because of battery heat or charge, don't resume for at least 5 minutes.
Mac: Support Dark Mode in Advanced View
Mac: Add standard command-comma shortcut for Preferences menu item

Looks like this version has now been pushed to the latest stable release. Just upgraded on my Win11 machine and everything seems to be working fine so far.

You know what I would like to see? The amount of runtime in the queue so I can decide if I need to allow another project (like Denis) to fetch WUs.

In times like this when WCG is kinda running a bit dry I want to make sure there is enough work for the overnight shift when I am sleeping.

I have 5 machines running (3 Ubuntu, 2 Win) in the basement and manage them from the kitchen using Boinc Manager on Windows (this machine does not run the client).

It's just a "would be nice". I can live without it. I only got caught one or two times.

It's not necessary to micromange like that. Set your other "backup" project to a priority of zero. If your primary project runs dry, BOINC Manager will automatically download work from your backup project, until work is available from the primary project again. That's what I have set up. No additional management is necessary.

OK, so where do I find this? The device profile option "Project Weight:" in Cross Project Settings on the backup project.

I see this in a WCG profile set at 100.

OK! Found the answer: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Preferences#List_of_computing_preferences

Resource share in Boinc = Project Weight in WCG

Ha, my backup projects are now both dry

Re: New [Developmental] BOINC Client v7.24.1 available

BobbyB -- Paul will probably reply, but the way to do that might depend upon whether you use the Device Profile Mgmt from the Backup Projects website (you can determine this under the Options | Computing Preferences menu in BOINC Mgr).

If you use BAM! or another Account Mgr, you'd set it there.

Or, if you have the Activity Preferences set in the BOINC Mgr under the Activity Menu to override on each client (i.e. - local prefs) -- you'll have to create an app_config.xml file in whatever is the backup Project's directory (unsure if you have Linux or Windows, for Windows it's down in C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\ -- I'd have to go look on my Linux boxes to tell you where it's at there).

I'm sure there's a thread someplace on this forum explaining this, but I couldn't readily find. Look at this for a hint:

https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Client_config...oject-level_configuration

And also toward the bottom of this thread with a post by Tom M (you'll need to substitute whatever is your backup project's name in that app file since they're talking about SETI and limiting WCG -- you'll want to go the other way around and limit your backup project until WCG runs dry):

https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=81592

--

Perhaps someone will find a thread with a step-by-step explanation but if not, the above can be used to reverse-engineer and make this work. Once you do it, it'll be a "set and forget" instead of having to manually adjust all the time.

Hope this helps...

Re: New [Developmental] BOINC Client v7.24.1 available

There's one problem with setting a backup project with resource = 0.

You better make sure there are no WUs of that backup project in the queue when you make this change. Luckily I just checked now because the six which were there this afternoon are still there and will expire in 7 hours. So I suspended WCG and they kicked in then resumed WCG.

Just a heads up for anyone else who want to do this.
