Hi,
Ages ago, I installed the tarball of the boinc agent, into my /home directory. Now that Ubuntu has apt packages available, this seems like a "more supported" way of running the software. I only want to run the client on one PC, so need help to do this. My problem is that I don't know whether I need the boinc-manager package, too. Also, I don't know how to re-attach the project i'm currently involved in, to the Ubuntu installed process. Is there a step-by-step guide to this. I tried to just "make it up as I went along", before, but this went wrong and I had to un-install boinc* and revert to my manually downloaded tarball method. Help really appreciated. Cheers, Chris. |

Yes, install boinc-manager too. The only reason you wouldn't do this is if you have a computer with no display hardware.
Then, run BOINC Manager. Attach to www.worldcommunitygrid.org with your member name and password. Job done. (You don't need to start the BOINC client. That all happens automatically.) Yell if you run into any problems. |

Wow, really! That sounds far too easy. I thought the manager bit co-ordinated scheduling on different hosts. Silly me.
Will try this when I get home. Many thanks, Chris. |

Re: Ubuntu- Moving from BOINC in /home to apt version. Apt is a word in itself, but I misread the title as moving from in home to apartment version.Wow, really! That sounds far too easy. Will try this when I get home. Many thanks, Chris.

Hi,
I was referring to Debian's package tool called "apt". Is the advice given still valid? Cheers, Chris. |

u can aptly assume that apt is fine.
----------------------------------------There's an other thread that mentions 'Synaptic Package Manager'. You may want to check that out too. There Didactylos also mentioned the apt instruction. (the only Unix-like i know is Xenix, but that's so long ago :-| ).

Ubuntu, by default, uses the gnome desktop environment ... that makes installing Boinc very easy.
Go to Applications/AddRemove & type in Boinc in the search bar ... ![]() HTH ![]() |
