Re: Where did Zim go?

I would like to know why someone can seemingly score points at a near infinite rate higher than I do. Frankly, I feel cheated and want to know why my work is devalued.
My participation in this project shall be determined by your reply.

Someone with a fleet of machines, or several quite fast machines can seemingly zip up the ladder in a hurry.
That doesn't mean that anyone with a couple older machines efforts are any less valuable.
NO one can predict which result will be THE ONE that provides the key to a cure for one of the projects.
When you look at the tens of thousands of people that process units, very few have that kind of power.
I have 60+ machines running 24/7 and Roger runs circles around me with a mere dozen powerful server class machines.
But I don't feel my efforts are devalued.
Each person contributes what they can, with what they have.
Each persons participation is valuable and valued.
In my opinion, your participation (at your own expense and on your own machines) may be relatively more valuable than someone using corporate machines to run up big numbers.
That is what makes this a great team, we have people who really want to help find cures.
One machine or 100, your help is needed and valued! smile

Re: Where did Zim go?

I'm not going to do the team much good running the pc a few hours a day maybe less than an hour now.
I'm not going to meet the deadlines for the calculations at that rate.
I am afraid I am going to have to say goodbye as well.

applause Well put!

Do you ever wonder why there are not more crunchers in the world? I mean if you look at it, only a few percent of the machines that could be used here, are used here.

The reason is paranoia, after the lack of information is fulfilled. For what it takes to crunch, or to understand why each machine is a victory, requires the human involved be pretty evolved.

The human mind is made of 3 basic sections: the id, the ego and the super ego. The id is all the basic animal instincts and programmed responses buried in the subconscious. The ego is how we see ourselves in our own immediate reality. The super ego is that which assumes realities beyond the immediate. Things like religion, philosophy, amongst others, that would point to a greater good.

What most don’t realize, is that they come a great distance in coming here. As by being here, we show that we do care about a brighter future not just for ourselves, but for everyone. So to make the jump to understanding why to be involved at all is 90% of the battle. The reason why there are some more avid crunchers in our group is personal connection.

What drives dear Cargod here, is a very personal connect more than a few times with cancer. I don’t share that problem directly, but fight for a 12 child watching a loved one die in a ICU. Filled with a cold of helpless, lost in pain, to watch as last moments turn to loss. Yes, I fight for all children like that. As the one that died was my father and the child was myself. The day of this team's creation at grid.org is also the 35th passing of that day.

Personally though, when people asking me why I crunch, Rather than give them a hard luck story, I say:

"I love the sound of CPU fans. There is no sound like it.. It reminds me of the fight back in grid.org, where every result, every point, every hour of CPU time was met with a salute. I cant quite place it. That whirring? But to me, there's nothing like waking to the sound of CPU fans in the morning. It seems to sound like a call. It sounds like?... It sounds like?..... victory."

You know Cargod, someday this will all be over. That every work unit screened. In heavens name, what will we do?

I really doubt that EVERY disease will be cured in my lifetime.
One way or another, the fight will continue.
I have a passion for cancer, but it is not the only disease that kills or makes life miserable for people.
As long as there is a need, I will do my best to contribute.

I hate to see anyone leave.
But only YOU know what is best for you.
If your personal circumstances improve, I hope you can find your way back.
If not here, then to somewhere where you can make a difference.
It's not the size of the contribution that is important, it's the fact that you did what was within your power to help.
I wish you the best of everything in your life.
Rich
