Happy Tday!!!
----------------------------------------While im cooking my brains out, does anyone here have a duel core machine running win98se? I have it running, but the second core seems to be not working. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

you need at least 2000 server or XP to make use of your second core
I would vote for Linux though |

Happy Tday!!! While im cooking my brains out, does anyone here have a duel core machine running win98se? I have it running, but the second core seems to be not working. I finished the cooking and cut up a bunch of wood for the stove. It's been in the low teens here with snow on the ground. W9X didn't support dual processors, much less dual cores. You need to be running XP on there or one of the many Linux distros that support dual cores. The W98 CD would be 'proof of ownership of a previous version' for an upgrade version of XP. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Just bought another 2 GB of DDR2 RAM for my main cruncher taking it up to 4 GB. Love those black Friday sales on Compusa.

Hi Courine. I stumbled across this article you might find interesting. mini-monster PC Not exactly your rack mount solution, but a similar concept. I suspect you could get the power level down with a different MB that didn't offer so many features. A common network drive for crunching space should also reduce the overall power consumption as each machine doesn't have to support it's own drive. They didn't list the power supply, but the picture shows a board which isn't much larger than what's inside an external drive enclosure.

The problem is that the one copy of XP I have that isnt a clone, has been installed on a machine that is to be discommissioned soon. When I was planning the q6600 machine, that copy was to end up there while the new duel core system was to get NT4. Since it is to be just a big landisk that crunches, i didnt look into multicore compatiblity. I was using Linux to crunch with until i could get the rest of the hardware going and try that cheap copy of NT4.
----------------------------------------The other day, the HCC project started having probs and the Linux involvment was on hold, so the time was now for the OS switchover. When the NT4 disc didnt load, I backed up to an old copy of 98se. No second core. I can go back to Linux and crunch dddt, but wanted to convert all the capital systems here to HCC asap. bbl, have to go kill some buddies online. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Good Go MM, Im working to get more onboard as you can see. Have a quad core coming. Its built, but needs to wait until the current unit is complete. I need the landisk unit up bad.
----------------------------------------Jal, looks like a winner. There is that cell machine that is a PCIe card. Seen it? Cargod, how do you "trade in" you 98 discs for xp. If its cheap, I may be able to get around this problem with a bit of xmas cheer. Pepe, It would be great if nt4 worked for duo's. It's a real webserver engine, reliable and cheap. I got a copy for 17usd. All the rest of the machines here will be linux soon, even the landisk unit. So really, nt is just a stop over. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
