Re: Sport's Laptop Adventures

Happy to hear your lappie is feeling better. cool
As to the issue of the reinstall do you have any drive imageing software? you could use to make a copy of your install off of the bad disk. Then back on to the healthy one. Thats alot quicker than reinstalling.

..have a copy of 'Maxtors' "MaxBlast"...i.e. 'Disc Copy' but I don't want to copy bad sectors!!...I'll do a fresh format and install, when I find the time ...the drive appears to be fine after a 'Scan Disc' ....for now

[Edit...I hate reposting]......and the lappie only has 1 HDD bay "Max Blast" wants to do a Disc to Disc Copy...again I'll do a fresh install @ my conveinience

Very few lappies have two drive bays, kind of defeats the purpose of the software. confused

ROYDEN!!!!! ....are you lurking???? Good to see you!!!

Been away for a bit, starting to get into busy season, long days, and pretty wore out by the time I get home. I feel a bit like some of my old crunchers, been working 100% for longer than they remember. laughing

See you hitting out some impressive numbers, 9-10,000 a day, way to go SPORT!

Just deciding the fate of a old cruncher now, it was the first one I crunched on, has worked for SETI, LHC ,Einstein, and Rosetta, before finding it's way to the WCG. and has done a serious tour of duty.

It is seriously outdated, but has been crunching for so long, I hate to retire it. About the only thing that wouldn't have to be replaced when I upgrade would be the Case, CD-Drive, Floppy & HDD. (Mind you the HDD has been running steady for 6+ years) biggrin

Oh well, guess I can gut it and keep the case and it will look the same. I am thinking of something built arround a Q9450, and ASUS Striker Extreme. devilish That should do the old girl the update she deserves after serving the web so well.

All the best, catch you arround.

Well, it started out many moons ago, when Pentium II's first came on the market (1998 confused ), as a P2-350Mhz, later upgrades took it up to 600 Mhz and finally 1 Ghz, but now, not even the power supply will support a new Motherboard, so it will be a total gut down to the base box. Although I am going to leave the INTEL PENTIUM II sticker on the front of it laughing.

cool Re: Sport's Laptop Adventures

What is worse is if you have an old case, the venting is poor in relationship to new cases. If you cant get a vent near the cpu fan, you will find you can bake a small cake in the corner where the power supply connects to the case. Even if you feed air to the cpu fan, the circulation will still be poor. The problem is that you wont see how hot the cpu is unless you notice the fan working overtime.

I drilled out an old case so to allow for this venting on a drill press, but ended up buying a few cheap cases for 20 bucks each localy. As if you try online, the cost of sending a 20 dollar case is about 20 in shipping.

Not too mention that you may only have a 250 watt power supply...thatjust won't do the trick

Hmmm, knew I was going to have to do something with the power supply, but had not really thought about ventilation. crying

Suppose I could do liquid cooling, or pepper the side with holes. I guess I have fond memories of that case, in fact I would find the sight of the shelf without it a little disturbing.

Lets face it the practical thing to do, is just by a new box, but bringing a old system back from the past with components really seems to be a little more Dr. Frankinstienish. biggrin

rose Re: Sport's Laptop Adventures

It also goes much easier if the case has nothing in it when you drill. The de-burring is on the inside and would be a nightmare after the fact, even if you back the drilling area with a piece of wood to catch the fillings.

I didnt mind the work, I just was running out of time to get the races going for WCG SPORTS. The two cases I didnt drill I left whole and sent as a surfer for some new needing a machine.

But in your case (pun intended), it's DRILL PRESS HOOOOOO! And while you are there, drill the holes for an additional case fan and for the power supply screws. The new PS footprint is different now days and the case fan will keep you from having to empty the case enough to do the work later.
