Re: Sport's Laptop Adventures

What is worse is if you have an old case, the venting is poor in relationship to new cases. If you cant get a vent near the cpu fan, you will find you can bake a small cake in the corner where the power supply connects to the case. Even if you feed air to the cpu fan, the circulation will still be poor. The problem is that you wont see how hot the cpu is unless you notice the fan working overtime.

I drilled out an old case so to allow for this venting on a drill press, but ended up buying a few cheap cases for 20 bucks each localy. As if you try online, the cost of sending a 20 dollar case is about 20 in shipping.

Not too mention that you may only have a 250 watt power supply...thatjust won't do the trick

Hmmm, knew I was going to have to do something with the power supply, but had not really thought about ventilation. crying

Suppose I could do liquid cooling, or pepper the side with holes. I guess I have fond memories of that case, in fact I would find the sight of the shelf without it a little disturbing.

Lets face it the practical thing to do, is just by a new box, but bringing a old system back from the past with components really seems to be a little more Dr. Frankinstienish. biggrin

Retired a wonky XP3200 & MB and in it's place an X2-6000 now resides. Original power supply @ 500watt does the job and the X2 runs much cooler than the old XP ever did but I did need to add one fan to the quiet side of the case directly behind where the CPU mounts on the MB. The current method of blasting air downward upon a CPU doesn't do much for MB temps but with the extra fan added all is now as it should be. Cool & crispy..

System useage and configuration.

Why do I get the feeling I'm the only one here running a stock 'puter that actually does real world work for a living? thinking d oh

In my line up of current crunchers, I have 2 stock models (1 Acer, 1 Dell)which serve as general duty workstations around the house (surf web, Play Games, write letters, spreadsheets, personal bookkeeping etc).

I also have 5 component built systems at my workplace (although not identical, they are darn close to it), that are used 8-12 hours a day, which means during weekends my stats tend to drop a bit, as most of the systems are shut off, except some that host files or services.

I have one laptop, which I use for general running around, and it is allowed to crunch, when I have it plugged in. And my personal system, that also hosts services internally to my network, and web server for some pages I host. It is a just plane sweet custom built system, that I used for various tasks that require more than normal processing power.

Even the dead skull (and hence needs to be rebuilt system), was holding several applications that date back and only ran under Win 98, and yes to answer the question, I have tried running them in XP with compatibility mode, in virtual systems etc. (Plan to load the Win98 & applications on the oldest thing I can find that will do the job), and the rebuilt system will that the place of one of the existing system, I am thinking it will work good arround the house, should have lots of power for gamming drooling , and misc use.

No system I use for crunching is used solely for that purpose, but some of them spend more time crunching that any thing else. laughing

...actually, GP, all my machines are box stock. Other than RAM, HDD, and case fan upgrades. Except for a couple of old PIV machines, all have other purposes in live ....
This dually is a server and dedicated workstation....the AMD 64 running XP MCE/Vista Ulimate in dual boot config. is a dedicated media center....my one remaining laptop does typical laptop duty....and one old 1.2 Celery that I rebuilt for a friend of mine (( runs Boinc under my account in return)) works full out all the time doing ...well everything!!! (( cann't believe it puts up with the punishment he gives it?!!?))...
... BUT... they all crunch 24/7 in the background!!!...even that old celeron kicks out a thousand points every 2 or 3 days!!!

On an unrelated note, wonder who the idiot spammer is who keeps daring me to ban them? I'm not even bothering - just delete their posts. Let Sport have some fun devilish

Figure if they're telling us to ban them, the least we can do is accommodate them. biggrin
