I find a large number of large files in the Windows Temp directory with the extension .$$$. Does anyone know by chance if thse files are created by the UD agent (containing work results or tasks or intermediate results or ...) and not deleted for one reason or the other. If, they are does anyone know what the reason might be that the files are not removed? The files take more than 50 GB of disk space in a 2 month timeframe. If not created by UD maybe one of you have an idea where this type of file comes from. Gives me a creepy feeling.
Thanks for any help. Ynze van der Ree |

I don't recall seeing anything like that from either UD or BOINC, and don't have any now of my own.
----------------------------------------I looked out there on the web at some lists of file extension meanings. For $$$ they had "temporary file", "backup", "OS/2 Archive". They sound generic, and if they are in the temporary directory, they could probably be deleted without too much harm. Could something (like a word processor) be doing an automatic timed backup, generating all of the $$$ files?

Filext.com says:
"Sometimes used as a temporary backup file. For example, AutoCAD and AutoCAD Lite register this extension as an Emergency Backup Drawing." Try running Disk Cleanup (Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools) and check every box to delete files no longer needed by the operating system, that might get rid of them too. Plus it gets rid of temporary internet files and bulky files that get left behind (eg. MS Office installs sometimes leave huge amounts of junk lurking behind after an install, etc...) |

It's true that AutoCAD registers that extension, but it keeps its temporary files in Document and Settings - and I've never seen it actually use the extension; normally it uses .sv$
But 50 GB of temporary files is something to be concerned about. Viewing the files in a text or binary editor/viewer may give a clue as to the actual contents, and what is generating so much junk. |
