Gone but still here.

Hi. I'm new to Community World Grid although I've been doing distributed computing almost since its inception. Some of you probably are also active in Boinc (which I still love and care about), so I can write this without feeling as though I'm "back-stabbing." Two days ago, in a huff, I uninstalled my Boinc software after leaving a post in a couple of places on their message boards why I was doing so. It seems that at least one of the projects in which I was participating is run by some folks who spend almost zero time watching their message boards. Some months ago, a thread there was hijacked which went on and on about a number of people who, in the thread author's opinion, should be murdered, shot in the head, assasinated, and/or beheaded. In all my years as a forum animal, I have never seen such hatred and avocation of blatent bloody violence--and after a number of months it was still up. Being an advocate of Free Speech, I'm a bit suprised about how upset I was/am. So, as decribed above, I left. I was later told by a Boinc administrator that this was not the first such incidence at that site, that the project administrators would go for months without looking at their boards, and that I should contact the administrator of that project with my concerns. Fair enough. However, I'm thinking that it may be, overall, a Boinc problem even more a particular project problem. I'm wondering as to what degree of control does the Boinc organization have over it's member projects. I realize that this is an extreme stretch, and I only present it as a topic of discussion, but what if a Boinc project wanted to work on an atomic weapon? What if their message boards consisted mainly of violent rhetoric? At what point would the existing contracts allow Boinc to step in? Please understand that while I, personally, may be very much against what the superpowers are doing in the world today, hatred is hatred, violence is violence and I really believe that the ballot box is the ultimate solution to the problem.

BTW, to add a little balance, I get a bad feeling in the pit of my innards when I see the Department of Defense being part of any volunteer, supposedly peaceful, distributed contributing project. I spent 36 years as a Public Health Microbiologist. If, as a scientist, you find out how to protect against a bioterrorist agent, you are also sure to find out how to make it more deadly. IMHO I believe that such research should be left to civilian agencies as the very well equipped and staffed Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia (I've been there for training.)

Re: Gone but still here.

Hello oldsalt19.

Firstly, I believe the person you are referring to has already been permanently excluded from the World Community Grid forums for repeatedly breaking the rules. It's sad when people can't remain civil in any discussions we have, but these forums (unlike some others, as you note) are actively policed by the Community Advisors and staff members. Community Advisors don't actually have any admin powers, but we try to keep the peace, and draw the attention of the staff where and when it is needed.

BOINC has no control over BOINC projects. There is no BOINC organization, in the sense you imply. BOINC is open source, and the principal developers work for UC Berkeley. As you probably know, the BOINC system was developed in support of the SETI work done by the Space Sciences Laboratory there. So, anybody can create a BOINC project. It is up to you as a BOINC user to decide which projects are worthy of your support, since there are no guarantees at all. In addition, the BOINC admins and developers have absolutely no rights or control over any BOINC project.

That's not the case here, of course. World Community Grid guarantees that all WCG projects have a humanitarian goal, that the software is free of viruses and malware, that the results of the project are published in the public domain, and that the project is sufficiently well funded that it will go to completion without floundering. Projects are also reviewed by the Advisory Board, a body of experts from the UN, WHO, and scientific and academic organisations around the world.

In summary, WCG projects have a pretty good pedigree.

I'm not sure I follow your comments about the Department of Defence. I assume you mean the US DoD. Where do they come into this?

Finally, I think this thread is in the wrong forum. One of the staff will probably move it to the chatroom, where it is more appropriate. Please don't take it the wrong way - it's just housekeeping.

Re: Gone but still here.

Didactylos,
Thank you for your informative and kind reply. About the Department of Defense bit, yes, I did mean the US DOD and furthermore it is a United Devices-associated project. More can be found at:
[url=http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/2002/mar02/03-08anthrax.mspx]

The above article ends with a US Government official saying:

"The Department of Defense is very happy to accept this contribution and looks forward to enabling technology advances through molecular design studies based on the structures of the compounds that have been identified," says Dr. Anna Johnson-Winnegar, deputy assistant to the U.S. Secretary of Defense for Chemical and Biological Defense."

Re: Gone but still here.

Ah, the grid.org Anthrax project. Wasn't even aware of it at the time. Of course, grid.org has ceased operations now, and I'm fairly sure that a project of that nature wouldn't be accepted for World Community Grid.

Take the press release with a pinch of salt, too. 3.5 billion molecules? I remember researching that number and discovering that it it a gross exaggeration. I'm not sure what sort of screening they were doing, either - but it certainly wasn't the sort of advanced docking being done by (for example) the FightAIDS@Home project.

Re: Gone but still here.

Thanks, Didactylos, you have been very kind. I feel much better for your information and realize that it was an old project and I should have used past-tense verbs. I am very much in favor of research to protect our population against bio-warfare agents, but I believe it should be treated in a public health mode, meaning civilian labs such as the National Center for Disease Control. I long for a future where people do not kill each other
Peace and Love.

Re: Gone but still here.

I have been crunching various distributed computing projects (42 months at Find-a-Drug) since 22 January 2002. I may have not gotten involved in cures for diseases had there not been an article on CNN about United Devices and the anthrax project. I don't worry about the DOD because I am retired from the Navy and the university at which I earned my Oceanography degree is deeply involved in government research.

Thanks for the insightful posts, Didactylos.

Re: Gone but still here.

This is not a forum to take cheap shots at the United States. If you have a case to make, then do so and put it in the chat section.

Re: Gone but still here.

halfcard,

one of the CA's already posted in this thread recommending the admins to move this to another place. I read the thread with interest and am pleased to confirm that finally the website admin of the site OldSalt19 refers to, woke up and posted a notice for removal of the most contentious thread.

cheers

Re: Gone but still here.

BOINC is not the actual project, it is just the 'bucket'.
Each project puts something different in the 'bucket'.
You can pick and choose what you put in YOUR BOINC 'bucket'.
If the site you referred to is not to your liking, there are many more projects that you can do.
I started distributed computing with SETI and was a top producer for them until I discovered the Cancer research being done.
I lost my mother and grandmother to cancer, and have had it 5 times myself...but I have never seen ET.
Most of my CPU cycles have gone into cancer & other healthcare projects since. But I leave one of my 65 PCs looking for ET, just in case he has the cancer cure in his UFO...
