Diversity, tolerance and the WCG community

I am a slight bit hesitant to raise this topic but I think it is one that needs at least a bit of thought in our community.

I am a bit concerned and saddened to see some of the recents events over in the Team Islam thread. Theological discussions do seem to have a bit of inherent risk of emtionalism. Also, when you are limited to just the written word, a lot of your real meaning and message can get lost making the challenge even greater. I agreed with Nelsoc's post that such discussions belong here in the Chat forum and not in a team thread but I suspect such a discussion here would be just as risky or problematic as it would be in any forum. While the team captain tends to quote the Quran in their thread, we can't restrict that without also likewise restricting quoting scriptures or expressions of faith in the Christians team thread or, for that matter, expressions of the joys of home brewing in that team's thread. Still, there is often some topic that serves to "light the fire" for just about any of us. I am not disagreeing with or questioning the actions of the admins in that situation. I am more looking at this from the community perspective. We are a highly diverse group and we all need to keep that in mind. It probably wouldn't be difficult to find someone in the community whose views you could find offensive but that also means the same is true of someone else with respect to your views. Team threads are created to provide a place for folks with a common interest to join together and crunch as a team. There is not an inherent intent to offend. If you vist a nudist camp, do you really have the right to be offended because everyone is naked and because they consider nudity normal and natural? Now you can certainly have a discussion of naturism with a naturist but you'll probably be more comfortable doing that somewhere besides the nudist camp.

I'm sorry if readers think I'm talking about a dead horse here but I debated making this post for a number of days. I finally decided that, while we have been very well behaved as a community this year and certainly so in comparasion to periods last year, a look at this topic may be beneficial to the community. I don't see how a community as large as ours can grow and thrive without tolerance and respect. We can't be as big as we are without serious differences but the mere existence of a difference does not dictate or necessatate problems. That's really up to each of us. Even last year with our periods of flame wars, it was not a widespread problem but if you put a crowd of people in a forest and someone tosses out a lit match, there will be a number of folks who will want to stomp out the match. That usually seemed to be how our flame wars began.

There's a part of me that feels like Jack Nickleson's character in Mars Attacks when he says to the Martian leader "Why can't we all just get along?" - right before he's impaled. I guess I've always felt that people will live up - or down - to your expectations so I try to have high expectations of myself and others, not out of a sense of demand but more out of a sense of hope.

Re: Diversity, tolerance and the WCG community

It's a topic that needs raising - so thank you.

The staff are continuing to deal with the particular issue that sparked this behind the scenes. In their haste to act, I don't think the initial response was anywhere near optimum. I think it is worth reiterating that claychipsmith hasn't broken any rules, and in fact his tolerance has been remarkable, given the unwarranted invasion of his team thread.

Personally, I was deeply disappointed at the religious intolerance, attempted baiting and uncalled for vulgarity. I know most of our members would never sink that low, but it's that troublesome minority that causes the headaches every time.

The staff and CAs have long memories, and we can't help noticing how certain names keep coming up - where there is a flamewar, there is X, instigating it.

World Community Grid can and will exclude repeat offenders permanently from the forums. So, if you are reading this and thinking of throwing some random punches - think again.

And if you can't tell the difference between religious intolerance, flamebait, and religious debate - then I think it would be far better not to post anything at all, to avoid giving offense.

Re: Diversity, tolerance and the WCG community

Hi as you know I'm a member now of the Christian Team and have welcomed the opportunity to express my faith in the forum and long may it continue.

As you may know I kicked off MyOnlineTeam in the early days as a non-denomination team as I was amazed, saddened by all the sabre rattling that was occuring between the teams when this is the World Community Grid. All of us from whatever background working together for good, that for me is the joy of this project.

I tried to keep my beliefs under my hat but what you are shines out and there's no hiding it.

Birds of a feather like to flock together and I have now found my true place on the Grid in the Christian Team with my view of the world among friends that understand my day to day and share that same experience

I'd just like to say I wish claychipsmith well and growth in his team as more great people join in this number crunching challenge we face together.

Together is a great word

I'm sure there must a research project to be written in how given free will we separated ourselves along Country lines, Sexuality, Faiths and Politics so very very quickly sad.

Re: Diversity, tolerance and the WCG community

Totally agree. I had never gone into Team Islam until I saw nelsoc as the last poster and I knew something was up. I went in and read and was very shocked. I had no idea that was going on!

I did see how claychipsmith was very tolerant and I give him much credit. He should have peace in his own Team forum and not be treated as he has been.

Thank you.

Who wants to bother with technicalities Whl. wink

Teddies the intolerant hate mongers. laughing Actually have always found them to be the opposite. Much more tolerant than the majority of so called religious types. Is usually the hatred and bs they object to and often refuse to turn a blind eye to. As the majority often will. Out of mind out of sight. So is easier to label them and try to drum them out of town than to admit your own faiths inconsistencies and misdeeds. Muslim or Christian doesn't matter.

BTW I have been around for a while as well and have quite the memory. Isn't always Teddies at the center of things. Do recall one of the CA's that stirred his own pot last year. Suppose some have forgotten though.

biggrin Re: Diversity, tolerance and the WCG community

Thank you for starting this thread.

I too have been dismayed to watch the behaviour of members posting to the Team Islam thread.

Personally I have many issues and disagreements with all the major religions on human rights matters - you know - gay rights, the role of women, birth control, Aids prevention etc. But just going all out to cause offence does not help anyone's cause.

To the poster of the "Butt-Out Tool" link - had you posted this in the chatroom as a funny/bizarre item, I would have been amused. Pity you wasted it by using it to stick your tongue out at someones sincerely held faith.

I applaud Claychipsmiths restraint and tolerance in not rising to the taunts he has faced. The poor guy has not broken any rules, but has still had to renew his team thread. His new team thread is being abused again already.

Claychipsmith - or Jaz, I think - may I call you Jaz? It is much easier to type. My name is Rob - how do you do? You say there are not many Muslims here at WCG. But do not be disheartened. Looking at the geographical spread of participants across the primary "Muslim World", I would say there are quite a lot of Muslims. And of course there are probably lots in Europe and the US (like yourself I think), who are quietly crunching along with us as part of their desire to help others as an act of charity. They do not all have to join your team of course, and I am sure the the 1200,000,000 Muslims you mention have a rainbow of differing views on their religion, and not a single mind. But keep trying and good luck. I think that perhaps our Muslim membership is choosing to keep quiet, and given the responses we have seen in this forum and society at large - who can blame them.

Someone else tried to goad a response with "Muhammad married a nine year old and had sex with her", and how can this be justified? I am sure thet most moderate Muslims would not even try. Jaz had not made any pronouncements on this subject! I note that you did not also berate the Christian Team thread with "Mary could not have been a virgin"! Aisha, I believe, was indeed SIX when he became betrothed to her. He married her when she was nine and had had her first menstrual cycle. Arranged/enforced marriages were a fundamental social construct in the Prophet's time and puberty taken to be the point of maturity and readiness for marriage. This reasoning was a cultural one and not unique to Islam. Muhammad merely followed the social norms of his time, doing exactly what was expected of him. This does not make it right of course. All early societies had very simple rules in such matters - which is better than no rules at all. In Judaism the age was only 12. The age of consent in the west has gone up only comparitively recently. We have more refined and protective rules these days and so do most modern Muslims. But in Muhammad's time women had no means of independant existance and families would seek to marry off a daughter, while obviously still chaste, to a worthy man of means in order to secure her future. This marriage was also apparently a political move. At the same time Muhammad took on a future responsibility to a wife. It is said that they genuinely loved each other. Men may have had what we may regard today as disproportionate power over women, but with it came heavy responsibilities. The Qur'an makes it clear that men were totally responsible to provide for their wives, even after divorce. There is a similar issue with polygamy. At the time Sura 4 was written, Muhammad's tribe was battling other tribes for survival, and many men were killed, leaving wives and dependants who would otherwise be destitute. As a result, Muhammad gives men the right/responsibility to take on extra wives if he feels he can support them equally. But the passage does not really sanction or enthuse about polygamy in general, and most modern Muslims surely favour one wife at a time. Times change, and everything needs to be interpreted in a modern context. Jaz seems to be trying to do this.

Arranged marriages and polygamy were not exclusive to Islam - various Christian factions have favoured both in the past (and for polygamy some present). What about this - right here in England! I take this from Simon Andrea's excellent book "The Anatomy of Desire" -

" ...The parish records of the city of Chester in the sixteenth century testify to a marriage between John Somerford, aged three, and Jane Brereton, a blushing bride of two. Half way through the service the groom began to grizzle and refused to continue with his vows. After several unsuccessful attempts at persuasion, the priest murmered, 'You must speak a little more and then go play you'. Five minutes later, little John Somerford was the happiest hisband in Chester."

Well, as a non Muslim, I had a go! Hope no one is offended. All ancient scriptures and cultural practices need to be interpreted in a modern context. It is as easy to find difficult/contentious passages in the New Testament as in the Qur'an. But let us try to see the good rather than the bad. Things are rarely black and white. As I said at the start, I have many disagreements with all the major religions. But we must be prepared to listen, and hope they do too. Discussion is everything.

As someone else said "Why can't we all just get along" smile

Re: Diversity, tolerance and the WCG community

To Didactylos, you and I have crossed swords before and I see it has left a taste in your mouth where you cannot be neutral. Your problem my friend,I bear no grudge nor do you pray on MY mind.

If someone started a Nazi Team would it be tolerated ? Would the theologyof Mein Kampf be allowed ? When a Religion can preach as much hatred as the Nazi`s that is wrong and I will say so. Read the previous thread by Chip...http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...hread=12863&offset=60

The standard of the Prophet Mohammed, his way of life is what every Muslim aspires to. Am I not allowed to question this ?

You are all quick to jump to Clay`s side without looking carefully at what was written, no one put Clay down infact most were as polite as possible whereas his defenders such as halfcard immediately went for a flamewar.

In Chips latest thread he wrote that if the thread was or seemed against WCG forum rules then don`t read it. My answer is if it`s against the rules it cannot be ignored just because there are 1,200,000,000 Muslims in the World. The same rules applyto you and me, that is fair.

As for saying it hasn`t happened with the Christians, I ask you to talk to Olivier because you`ll find it has happened there to. You may see it as attacking but it is education from our point.if you believe the World is flat and we tell you it is round and attempt to disprove your theories as bunkum it is not a personal attack but an attempt to educate you.

Yes Didactylos where ever there is something wrong you`ll find Teddies, you can demonise if you wish or you can open your eyes to why they speak up.

Dirk Gently you may like to read this paper
