Just Curious?

But WCG is a non-profit Company right? Or are they charging research companies a pile of dough to use the general publics computers in the name of humanity?

Re: Just Curious?

Neither!

Researchers aren't charged a penny for the computer time. However, WCG only accept projects from non-profit organisations.

World Community Grid itself is an IBM sponsored philanthropic initiative. It's entirely funded by IBM, and staffed by IBM employees. Obviously, IBM don't make any money from WCG, but it doesn't hurt their public image, either ;-)

edit: And here's a link to the lowdown: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=aboutwcg

Hurt the public image ? Are you kidding? It boosts IBM's public image let alone hurt it. I wish all companies start such iniciative to help humanity. I guess IBM PR should use this extensively on the campaigns. All companies contribute to social welfare activeties in order to support their public image one way or another.
I can't think of a social welfare project that is more effective than WCG!!

Thank IBM and Staff supporting it :)

Thank you, IBM and the other philanthropists. If it helps you:-
1). Why not acknowledge yourselves with a small announcement like "Financed and assisted by IBM"?
2). Why has grid.org been left out in the cold?

Re: Just Curious?

it started off with missing the 'not' in the "doesn't (as in Does Not) Hurt" and we're talking one or the other being dead. Why should grid.org be acknowledged here and by whom? UD folded the place, WCG said Welcome and many grid.org volunteers chose to come. I've seen some other projects that also had considerable 'surprise' growth simultaneously and not knowing the source. Should WCG though rebuild because the transit-house got more new guests in a short time, where it normally would happen over a multi month period? The budget is limited and rolling out 4 'new' projects in the next 6 months is a resource drain.... it's a choice where some wants may get filled if the new forum software is released.... If.

Oh and if it were up to me, I'll push to give acknowledgement for the HPF(1) work to the ex grid.org crunched. It's of no fault to these volunteers that they might have been taken for a ride, crunching in good faith. To this day though I continue to wonder why UD kept that recommendation in place from thebeginning thru the day of closure for HPF(1) volunteers to join WCG (and not crunch at Grid.org).... was UD's heart not in it and their 'proof of concept' over extended to become that millstone around the neck? I feel sincerely sorry, to include for myself for falling and failing to 'reading' the signs before I joined there end of 2004.

No time to ponder further on the past today.... Avanti.

Hi dictatos,
I do well understand that you mean "It does not hurt IBM's Public image", though English is not my native language.

I never meant to be sarcastic or offensive. Just over expressed myself I guess. All I wanted to say is that IBM takes the right way, but should use it's suport on WCG in its campains extensively, so that both IBM and WCG initiative can benefit more from it. Sort of win - win situtation. Of course IBM would not make money out of it but sole objective of a company running social welfare project is not to make money on it anyway.
That is my point.

Re: Just Curious?

Agreed. However, the whole thing started with the word "but" (or did it start somemhere else?). Who was trying to refute what?
