Billy bob,
I got a big one on my Office machine.... already 61% after 240 hours... I do not think this P3-600 will be allowed to finish although it could finish within the 3 week timeframe the 336hrs border will prevent it... such a waste!!! The end of the story is that I get 4750 points on 28/01/05... ![]() ![]() |

I should be able to transfer her unit to one of my puters, ![]() ![]() I have not actually tried this so it may not work and may corrupt something. You do this at your own risk! 1) Shutdown the agent on both yours and your wife's computer. 2) Use your favourite zip compressor to backup all the files in the WCG directory, including any subdirectories which you have. Move this backup to a safe area on your PC or burn it to a CD-RW etc. Do the same on your wife's computer. 3) Delete the WCG directory, including any subdirectories (unless your zip program has already done this). Do the same on your wife's computer. 4) Copy your wife's zipped up directory to your machine and extract it. 5) Copy your zipped up directory to your wife's machine and extract it. 6) Start up the agents and see what happens. |

![]() The Work Units are assigned by number, how else would they know, who they had sent them to So I think that if you try to return a Work Unit that was not assigned to you, it will get rejected as the resulting Work Unit will not match the database info regarding its original donor Just an observation Regards |

If you want to transfer the unit, transfer the ENTIRE directory. Certain files in the directory contian the device ID, username, password, and so on. In essence, the grid server will take YOUR computer as HERS.
----------------------------------------You can have several work units idiling around because you have several directories, each with its own files containing its own device registry. They can only run once at a time, but each will appear to the server as a different device with its own data and assigned work unit. As such, the results that the server receives will be legibly from the intended device. I have searched the registry and found almost zero critical registry intergration; of course, I might be wrong. I'm not sure whether IP is used as a checking method by server to identify and verify device-workunits, but if so, those with dailup (and thus changing proxies) will be greatly disadvantaged, so I do not think so. I have tried this personally, and in fact, my USB thumb drive is in itself a registered device, because it contains its own work unit, wcg directory, and files. I can carry it to ANY COMPUTER that isn't running wcg, plug it in, and run it on THAT computer. Even if results are submitted from that computer, it would be credited towards my USB key's device profile, and thus my username. I can turn off my computer's resident grid agent, and run from my usb key, submit results, download results, no problem. Why am I doing this? In future, my primary computer will not have internet. I thus have to use the USB in order to use the CPU of my primary computer, then plug it into another computer with internet to upload results credited to a consistent device under my name. Of course, the drawback is storage space score impact, but better than nothing at all, and soon, with development, flash memory will become so cheap and available I can carry the desired 10 gigs around with me. In short, just copy the whole folder containing the grid agent to your computer from hers. You'll need a CD-RW OR a zip floppy OR a thumb drive OR or a network file sharing connection first, though, since the thing is larger than the 1.44 mb of normal floppy. Glad that the steps that I outlined above work!

Oh, and I DO NOT recommend usung the usual compression programs, because although the chance of error is very slim, it may corrupt the data in the work unit. I've had experiences of complexly encrypted files being corrupted by compression programs.
I recommend copying the whole lot over WHOLE. Some compression programs also overwrite and flatten the directory if you don't watch your specifications. |

Hay Y'all
----------------------------------------I think the tumbdrive is cool. You shoud post all the info like do's and don'ts. I have never heard anything like it. At the laest the speed potental may be a small factor too. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jan 27, 2005 1:53:24 PM] |

I found out that only 2 core files are needed to be put into a folder on the thumb drive:
ud.exe udtapi.dll Do the above only IF you want to register the thumb drive as a device. This is because the rest of the files are either work unit files, or settings/ID files. Alternatively, you can install grid agent to your thumb drive directory. Unless you want to transfer the entirety of a grid agent, its work unit, registered info, etc from one drive to another in working condition, (whether the drive be a thumb drive or in a computer), do not copy the ud_xxxxx files, where "xxxxx" is a number - that's the work unit. The *.ud files, I suspect, are information about the work unit and registration. Once you have run the ud.exe from your thumb drive, and registered it, it will then proceed to download a work unit, and create data files on the thumb drive. Make sure you have enough space, and you don't need to bother about the files created. Then you're ready to plug the key into any computer and use its processor power for your porta-wcgagent. ![]() This is especially useful for people who are on the go and have to use a different computer everytime they sit down to do work for most of the day. The CPU score and RAM score will depend on the host computer you run on, and I suspect will keep changing computer to computer. Thus when you're ready to send back results, the program will run a benchmark on the computer only then. So if you want points, do try to plug it into a decent computer with internet connection when you're ready to upload results. Please do not to use this method to get the best points everytime you send back results if you're using multiple computers; you'll mess it up somewhere on the line eventually and have to start from scratch all over again if you do it in rapid repetition. I don't think the grid agent is built to be rapidly shut down, shuttled, and run repeatedly across computers which already have their own agents. And all the trouble isn't worth it anyway - the points are almost worthless in currency, it's the results that are worth their bytage in gold. :} (No offense to the low-result point hoarders) Caution: If you are not using a Hi-speed USB connection (USB 2.0), this method will cause grid agent to be EXTREMELY SLOW, because of constant data transfers between the thumb drive and the computer. Caution: Removing the thumb drive while a work unit is in progress WILL corrupt the work unit. (Always exit from the agent and wait awhile until the thumb drive indicator light stops flashing before removing. If there is no indicator led, simply wait around a minute before unplugging.) Caution: ALWAYS use the "copy" function, when you're dealing with thumb drives. If you cut and paste, and the files get corrupted, chances are you won't have a good backup left behind. |
