When flicking through the forums, it become apparent that several people spend alot of time posting on topics. You know who you are!!
----------------------------------------Just thought it would be a good idea if we took a few minutes to introduce ourselfs as I have been away from the forums for some time. My name is John Crook and I am a Consultant Mechanical Engineer in Newcastle upon Tyne in England. I joined WCG in 2004 but after a few days of crunching my computer went down and I was reluctant to use the UD agent as I blamed it at the time for the demise of my system. Probably more to do with the fact that the system was overclocked to the extreme and had been running 24/7 for several years. I have now rolled WCG out on all of my machines and for some reason cant help but to check my progress every morning. Think I should see a Doctor! How about yourself?

I've been in engineering for the past 25 years. I am a C.N.C. setter operator. Before that I was a professional musician for 11 years.

Minus >20 years to the big 65!
Now I spend my time in creative writing and Sudoku. I used to be fond of puzzles and intelligence tests and was a member of Mensa. I doubt if they would accept me now. I found 960 solutions to the Magen David puzzle. Now I go around with hearing aids in both ears and artificial lenses in both eyes. |

I found 960 solutions to the Magen David puzzle. Now I go around with hearing aids in both ears and artificial lenses in both eyes. Computer geek since 1969. I do computer repair (warranty work mostly for a major manufacturer as a subcontractor) part time. I maintain a corporate network for an auto dealership and (with the owners permission) run BOINC on most company machines. My degree is in mathematics, though I have never worked in any related fields. I finished an on the job training program about the time I got my degree. I could make $700 a month using my degree or $2000 a month as a Chef. I was a hotel chef for almost 10 years before I burned out. I did preside over the very first computerized kitchen/dining room in the chain. I was the only one that was not afraid of computers (as well as being the youngest chef in the chain). I moved back to Montana and played meatcutter until the packing plant went broke, then sold health insurance for 7 years. Now I sell cars & trucks/suvs, order new car inventory, and keep the corporate network running. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I know for sure I don't go as far back as some here, but I was interested in computing from a young age. The State of Minnesota had a government computing center which I got to see. The big attraction was the new IBM 1401. Quite the machine for its day. During high school we were able to access computing resources through a time sharing sytem called TIES ( Technology Information Education Services ). Everything was text based and we had a teletype terminal with a paper tape reader. Pretty much same resource in college.
----------------------------------------During one of my first jobs after college I was involved with IBM 129 keypunch machines and a Burroughs mid level system 2700 which ran an IPS(Item Processing System). This was with a bank and we processed a couple of million checks per day. We also had large dividend accounts for corporations which I spent many an overtime hour sorting. We had a smattering of other equipment: DEC and NCR for small specialized jobs. A couple jobs later, I worked with a Burroughs large scale 6800 with removable multi platter disc pacs. They always looked so cool. It was during this time Apple was revolutionizing the educational world by pumping the school districts full of Apple II's. Our outfit bought them in bulk as a buying cooperative for the school districts.. About half of the external disk drives were DOA. I have been with the current job for 20+ years and have watched and participated in helping the transition from our first IBM PC XT to our present setup. I loved working in the glassed in, raised floor computer rooms, but what we have now now is so much better, there is no comparison. Enough for now Cheers
