Mac and PC - issues? - help please

Hi

your thoughts please -

I've completed, ie Valid 6of these on a couple of PCs

I also have completed but 'Inconclusive' on my Mac Pro, 5 units in all - still new to this so not sue what this status means in real term - ie how long before a decision is taken w.r.t. points/scienec etc

Today - I have a further 4 on my Mac - just let them run?

is it a PC and Mac clash?

Inconclusive will remain until the quorum 10 for this project is achieved. If there are though too many errors, the job is taken out of circulation and some manual crediting takes place for those that were not in error, with emphasis on manual. You can follow on the Result Status page what the deadlines are for the extra copies, so that's how long it can take. But, if those extra copies dont come back i.e turn into a 'No Reply' it will take even longer. On average though on a stable project the validation occurs for over 90% of the jobs within 4 days.

Here's some XYZ on the Results Status and navigation: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=6105

According to this page there are apps for both win and OSX (but it doesn't properly distinguish PPC vs. intel).

According to this page there is only a win app.

Re: Mac and PC - issues? - help please

Hello zombie67,
As I recall, the Mac version of AC@H was pulled because there were not enough Macs for a speedy quorum. There were problems with 2 versions of OS/X for x86, each requiring a separate homogenous redundancy class plus Mac PPC. I have put in a request for more information about current Mac projects, which are confusing me and other members.

Fair enough. But my point remains. The two official pages should match, regardless of the status. Better yet, all links should point to a single page so that this kind of contradiction isn't possible. The goal of my post was to get the discrepancy on the page(s) corrected.

Re: Mac and PC - issues? - help please

There's a 3rd page where all sorts project information is collected you wont find anywhere else, last updated Feb.21, 2008. The general 'help' was written pre launch. 'Help' is exactly that 'general' and at times a bit outdated, so thanks for pointing that out. We'll pass it to the webmaster.

At Any rate the System Requirement page being linked to is the 'official' reference and lists Win & Linux, where Mac was pulled absent sufficient contributors. Taste that line.... insufficient Macs volunteering!

Once AC@H is past the RC1 phase to proof the concept it's expected for it to be rolled out in larger volume than the 820 work units a batch consists of and send out say once per week. That bigger roll out is only in the cards atm. When it comes no-one on the public side knows.

I noticed that. Kinda self-fulfilling though. Not enough right now? Let's make it permanent by pulling the app.

In any case, so long as the filter is one per machine and not one per user, I can help by adding more macs. But I still don't which of my Macs can help. Saying just "Mac" or "OSX" is not enough. That's like saying a project supports "intel". You really need to know the OS to make it meaningful. Same thing in reverse for Macs.

Re: Mac and PC - issues? - help please

I wonder what these little (highlighted) and maybe embarrassing lines are in each of the Mac OS science criteria:

HPF2
* An Intel processor
* At least 250 MB RAM (with virtual memory enabled)
* 600 MB Hard Disk Drive with at least 100 MB available for use
* The ability to display 8-bit graphics at 800x600 resolution
* Operating System: OS/X
FAAH
* An Intel or PowerPC processor
* At least 250 MB RAM (with virtual memory enabled)
* 600 MB Hard Disk Drive with at least 50 MB available for use
* The ability to display 8-bit graphics at 800x600 resolution
* Operating System: OS/X

Tell me what is left to guess here?
