I'm gonna have to agree with Beren here. If IBM wants to draw some extra numbercrunchers to the grid, it should target online realms, preferrably gamer oriented realms, since they often have stronger machines and they like a fair amount of competition.

I really doubt that there is that much on the hacking in concerns... it is more likely to be the idea of running a program they don't fully grasp or understand. Either that or there are some really ignorant security people out there... Being a security based PhD here i find the idea of corps denying this sorta project on that sorta ground a bit of a cop out from really investigating it fully.

Re: security and hacking
We take security very seriously on this project and I drive my management crazy making sure we take care of any and all potential security concerns. The last thing we would need in a philanthropic project like this is a black eye due to some security problem. While I know, as a computer scientist, that it is almost impossible to guarantee 100% security, I must say that the agent software used for World Community Grid is probably the most secure piece of software you have on your PC (counting Windows, the standard applications, browser, device drivers, etc.). If I were a hacker, and knowing what I know, the World Community Grid agent would be my least promising avenue for attacking a machine. The software we are currently using has been audited in various ways for vulnerabilities and we employ ethical hackers to see if there are any problems that we should address either with the agent or our servers. While on one hand I don't like the idea of publishing a lot of detailed security information which might make the novice users unjustifiably nervous, I am planning on writing a security overview to be placed somewhere on our web site, because the question does come up often in various meetings. |

I have just gone through the team ranking statistics and I would like to take my hat off to IBM. There are a IBM teams all over the world crunching - Continents, Countries, Cities, even within cities. In yesterday's results alone, two out of every three teams on the first page are IBM Teams!
I don't know what IBM teams consolidated daily contribution is - BUT IT MUST BE HUGE ! Well done guys - keep it up. Seems as though at IBM you do a lot and just don't brag about it. GOOD JOB! and as for the rest of us, we are happily crunching away making our unit-by-unit contribution to this project ![]() |

Hi All
----------------------------------------![]() Don't forget all the IBMers that may be crunching for non-IBM teams... Including myself! I'm an IBMer and it's enough for me to be using IBM software on IBM machines for me to treat myself to a bit more freedom where teams are concerned. I also think it's good that there is so much representation fom IBMers around the world, however it's also a good thing that all the IBM points don't go into one team as I think that would discourage other teams from aiming high. Great work everyone! Keep on crunching! |

One big IBM team would have been a real challenge for the now dwindling /. team..
But MyOnlineTeam is certainly coming closer!! Daily stats are allmost the same now! |
