Back on August 18th, our IBM Ottawa offices were bombarded with the email quoted below. (Other offices probably were too) I know several people have since responded by allowing EZUpdate (our internal software manager) to install the WCG app on our laptops. I'm sure some, including me, have even installed WCG on their home PCs as well.
IBM has launched a new humanitarian effort linked directly to our values and to promote our leadership in innovation that matters for the world. It is built upon the fact that at any given time, only a fraction of the processing power of the world's estimated 650 million personal computers is in use. So, we thought: What if this idle power that nobody is using could be tapped for humanitarian purposes, to help fight human disease, track killer storms or improve crop yields? IBM’s answer is World Community Grid. In November 2004, Sam Palmisano launched World Community Grid as the world’s largest public computing grid benefiting humanity. World Community Grid uses grid technology to provide researchers with a readily available pool of computational power to solve complex problems, such as human disease, natural disasters and hunger. Importantly, World Community Grid is simple, safe and free to use. IBM, our CIO, and I all stand behind this effort. Even more exciting – each of us can help. We can provide the power for this important research. Imagine the contribution the thousands of PCs in North America could make. That's why I'm encouraging each of you to participate in World Community Grid by downloading a safe program that, when your computer is idle, donates your extra computing power. There are several ways to join: You can go directly to the web site whether you're at home or on the IBM network, http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org. To make it easy for you to join, World Community Grid is also now available via ISSI, where it can be found under the name: Agent/World Community Grid, (internal webpage removed for security reasons). Finally, World Community Grid is currently being pushed to your desktop via EZUpdate this month. When you get the desktop notice that there is software for you to install, please click and proceed. While it will not install automatically, it can install in five minutes at a convenient moment for an employee. All that is required is for you to be online -- and have a willingness to contribute. When you join as a member, I also ask that you please join the IBM Team. Doing so will enable us to track and report on the number of employees that are part of this important initiative. I sincerely hope that you will join me by volunteering your PC's power. You simply can't put it to better use when you're not working on it. And, this is an opportunity to demonstrate IBM’s values at work by creating innovations that matter for our company and for our world. I appreciate your time and consideration. I've removed some aspects of the note to keep some portions private and for security reasons. Just thought I'd share this with you all so you can see that IBM is indeed supporting this project internally. We just may not necessarily brag about it as much as we possibly should. (And by the way, I joined team "IBM Canada". Most colleagues I talked to about WCG were not even aware of the team aspect of the project as they apparently did not read that far into the above email. ![]() ![]() |

Technically IBM wins because they start off with a base of over 350000 employees worldwide who were the first to be contacted to join the grid. IBMers probably feel better identifying themselves with smaller units such as departments (Application management, R&D, Business consulting ant IT outsourcing, servers, PC division just bought by Lenovo... etc). It's also safe to assume many IBMers are members of Slashdot, Tribal War and other teams.
What surprises me is the relative silence of all those IBMers in the forums. I guess most run the WCG as a screen saver on their business laptops while working and do not get much more involved than that. Maybe IBMers don't want to show they have too much time on their hands... maybe they don't have any at all!!! Have you noticed who is absent? all of IBM's major competitors: Microsoft's team is insignificant and so is HP's, Dell's, Oracle and Google, Accenture and Cap Gemini, CSC and EDS etc etc. This promotion of grid computing is a great marketing coup for IBM, and Humanity benefits. We can take on IBM in the next projects because all the other teams form a base we can build on, lets keep on recruiting members. |

Hi all,
I am a newbie to WCG, but, was involved in SAH for a couple of years and been in the Industry for a very long time. I was working for an entity that ISM Canada (IBM Global Services) took over, and when I got the email, last month, about WCG, I jumped at it. Technically, I am an employee of ISM Canada, and therefore, IBM, but, I would rather remain with the group I joined 2 weeks ago, ISM Canada. Yes, IBM is truly a Global Corporation, but, our little team allows me to feel like a big fish in a small pond, rather than the small fish in the big pond. It provides me with personal pride in my accomplishments within my own little 'entity' and that I can make a difference. Tnx ISM Team, and keep 'em crunchin'. |

I got involved with this World Community Grid thanks to our internal software manager at IBM (ISSI) and was surprised to see that we have so many IBM teams in here.
I wonder if we could do anything to try and consolidate them, some seem to be fairly identical. With the next version to hopefully be put on ISSI any new user of the software in IBM will automatically begin to process work under the IBM member name. |
