New FreeBSD client, was working fine, now idle

Hello. I have been running the UD client for a while on a Windows desktop, but finally got around to getting the BOINC client installed on my MUCH more-powerful FreeBSD desktop. At first it was kicking errors but I figured it was because I didn't enable the Linux setting on the client... once I made that change in the Makefile and rebuilt BOINC, it seemed to connect to my account fine and churn right along.

However, when I woke up this morning, it was idle. I participate in all projects except AfricanClimate so I couldn't imagine I ran out of work. On the Tasks tab in the Advanced view on BOINC Manager, I see 2 tasks for Human Proteome Folding at 100% completion. I imagine those were the two running when I went to bed (dual-core CPU). However there are 8 other tasks for other projects that don't show that they've even started.

So why is my client sitting idle?

The process is still running:

desktop# ps -ax | grep boinc
55968 ?? S 0:08.98 boinc_gui
37407 p0 S 0:09.09 /usr/local/bin/boinc_client -dir /var/db/boinc

Since you always seem to want to see the messages list, here's mine:

Hi sremick,

those 8 files in the message log are parts of 1 task by the looks of the numbers and file extensions.

It you look in the BOINCmgr, Tasks tab, how many jobs show "Ready To Start"?

Are those 2 jobs still listed as 100% with the "Ready To Report" comment? If so, go to the Project tab, select WCG and hit the Update button in left margin, than check if in the Message tab if 2 Tasks are being reported and the entries in the Tasks tab clear. After the clearing, please repost all the new messages.

Also, visit the Result Status page on My Grid to check what the status is of the 2 completed jobs and advise.

Yep. Sorry I didn't post more, but the forums were kicking me back MySQL errors when I tried to include the full message list. That is the tail end, though.

There are 7. I miscounted in my first post and said 8.
Are those 2 jobs still listed as 100% with the "Ready To Report" comment?

No. They are at 100% but still have a status of "Running"
Also, visit the Result Status page on My Grid to check what the status is of the 2 completed jobs and advise.

Here's what it says:

Hmm. That's not good.

Could this be the freezing HPF issue? sremick, you could try suspending and resuming the tasks, to see whether this is a known (but rare) issue.

Someone refresh my memory - which projects are "known good" on FreeBSD?

Actually, WCG needs the "suspending / wait 30 seconds / resume" done in the "Projects" tab for that workaround to function on HPF2, if it's that.

Re: New FreeBSD client, was working fine, now idle

Ok, I tried Suspend... wait a few mins... Resume from the Projects tab. That jostled it back to life.

However, all is still not well. Now, all my current tasks are giving "Computation error". This consists of 7 instances of Dengue and 1 of HCC.

Here's the tail end of messages:

Re: New FreeBSD client, was working fine, now idle

Sorry about the flakiness. I think this sums up WCG's priorities well: http://boincstats.com/stats/host_os_stats.php?pr=wcg&st=0&or=2

I notice they are all failing immediately with the same error code. Do you know what it means?

Please will you disable DDDT and HCC in your preferences, so we can see whether this problem is project-specific.

Nope, sorry. That's why I'm here. ;)

Ok, did that, and aborted the DDDT and HCC tasks. Some proteome folding tasks rolled in and started crunching fine, with 2 active now, and 1 queued along with an AIDS task.

So something strange with DDDT and HCC tasks? But not Proteome folding? AIDS uncertain yet... haven't seen any try to start.

Re: New FreeBSD client, was working fine, now idle

oogled and in the whole of the BOINC computing realm found only one identical report and no one responding. The BOINC FAQ reports exit code 132 as the inability on non-windows systems to obtain the run time for a job, as in infinite.
ERR_GETRUSAGE -132

On non-Windows systems only:

BOINC wasn't able to get the running time for a given process.
