will results produced by using a virtual machine (vm) match the results of a real machine?

In the interim of no HCC work for Linux, I was wondering if a win98 install on a Linux VM partition could be used, one partition per physical core, thus allowing HCC work to continue one these multi-core machines?
I don't know if this approach has been tried by anyone yet.

Thanks.

Hi Jal2
I've got one of my XP machines running VM Linux but haven't tried BOINC on it. Your experience and results will be very interesting to the community for sure. Go for it..........it shouldn't hurt anything and the results will be very interesting and usefull.
Let us know.

I am actually thinking that you might be best off running beta test work units on a VM, and production work units only on a "real" machine. With the beta test work units, project staff are watching more closely to make sure the results are correct, whereas with production projects, validation occurs automatically and, for some projects, the quorum is only two.

That's a noble idea, but beta is only needed rarely in case of a problem or a new project. It could be a month or more before new beta is available and not many beta units are set up. Enable beta, but run production. It's always possible to check the results status to see how things are going. You will find out in a hurry whether the workunits are valid. If only everyone with suspect machines ran beta and got nothing but errors, that would give a misleading result for a new project or change.

My beta has been enabled for months, but I have only seen them on one day. One would have to be watching when each beta announcement comes out and have a clean queue available to (almost) guarantee getting some beta units.

You should have no trouble using a VM. Go for it.
