Hello,
I have just de-installed the United Devices client and installed BOINC to replace it. This seems to have gone OK and I am crunching away with the first work unit showing it is 5.98% complete ![]() However, ZoneAlarm shows that there is constant internet traffic, which doesn't seem right as it has been going on ever since the install. It shows that the application which is called 'World Community Grid for Windows' by ZoneAlarm is constantly connecting to the internet and producing the traffic. However, I have a wireless modem/router, but there doesn't seem to be any traffic actually going via the modem/router. I have allowed 'World Community Grid', 'BOINC Client' and 'BOINC Screensaver' full access via Zonealarm. Any ideas on how to fix this? thanks. |

Zone Alarm is registering the communication between the manager and client, which uses network protocols, but never actually leaves your machine (the localhost IP address is used). Newer versions of Zone Alarm can apparently be set to ignore this address, but I'm using an old version which can't. The common solution is to start the Boinc client as a service, but not start the Boinc Manager unless you actually want to check on the client.

Many thanks to both of you.
It seems to be an annoyance rather than anything more serious from what you are saying. I'm using ZoneAlarm version:6.0.631.003, which is old, but has always worked well for me and given me reliable service, so I never upgraded it. (Besides from which I hate doing upgrades on things that work!) I think it might be most sensible to upgrade ZoneAlarm as the first attempt to stop it constantly registering traffic. Any idea on which version of ZoneAlarm I would need. i.e. is the free version still OK, or would I need the Pro version? If I can't get that to work then I may have to ask for help in starting the BOINC client as a service, but not the BOINC manager, as you suggest jal2, but that sounds complicated. ![]() thanks again. |

When you installed Boinc, it asked how you want it to run. One of the options is as a service. I don't know how you installed it, or if you have to uninstall it first, and then re-install as a service, to change this setting.
----------------------------------------As for the Boinc manager, it's probably in your 'start -> program files-> startup' folder and needs to be removed so it will not auto-start when you login. There are other threads discussing this, which a CA should be able to point you to. |

...a 'simple way of getting to look like a service is to start boinc normally, then using Task Manager end process Boincmgr AND NOTHING ELSE!!!!!!!
The system keeps running, sending and getting work but does not show constantly on ZA. When you want to see what is happening, start Boincmgr manually then kill it exactly the same way...... |

Once you've killed BOINCmgr.exe without causing BOINC.exe to crash (terminate process, not thread-tree), you can start BOINCmgr.exe and exit it thru it's menu as often as you like as it lost ownership of the core client. You wont be able to close BOINC.exe anymore, but by using command line instructions. It's a work around, but cant recommend it. Advantage until 6.0 is that you remain to have access to graphics, but even for a service install there is a work around to still get them.
----------------------------------------ZoneAlarm version:7.1.078.000 (free) can be configured to ignore all localhost/loopback traffic.... no more blinking. @Jal2, ref "There are other threads discussing this, which a CA should be able to point you to.", you are free to do that for the CA's. Permission unreservedly granted. Added: Ignored an option in 5.10, but trying out following allows to take shutdown control over BOINC, not started as a service: 1. Start BOINCmgr 2. Do Advance > Select Computer and enter the LAN IP for the client, not localhost, and enter password (in the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file) 3. Do Advance > Shut Down Connected Client Did it on a remote client and worked a treat. BOINC.exe was closed while BOINCmgr.exe remained up. Dont know how that works in a none-LAN setup. Suppose entering 127.0.0.1 works (it did here :o).

Sekerob:
----------------------------------------ZoneAlarm version:7.1.078.000 (free)... Where did you get this? I went to Zone Labs and I couldn't find the FREE version -- only a TRIAL version. Well, one page had an Internet Security/Anti-virus version free with a "TrialPay" account; thanks, but no thanks. [append] The latest FREE version was 7.0.408.000. Hi Debs,
----------------------------------------that download page is seriously misleading in that it indeed says "TrialPay' step 1/2/3 . Here's the link to the FreeLoader page: http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp Click on the far right blueish box ![]()

You can always easily find the latest free one at download.com also. |
