I find geography such a good ezelsbruggetje - hey! Indeed, I was wondering. I am proud you did! ![]() ![]() ![]() This afternoon I have been inquiring when the new Grand Hotel desk computer will be arriving, but it won't be until January, so I'm afraid we will have to do with this aftands apparaat for at least another month. This is so entertaining. When I google "aftands apparaat" (= worn-out machine), Google thinks I meant "afstand apparaat" (some device that has got to do with distance (afstand), like an afstandmeter: e.g. this multitool). It is so good that your acquaintance with the EVGA boys yielded Grand Hotel customers. Maybe they could join the party tonight in our Bostella-hall? They must cover their feet though, you can't dance the bostella without socks, shoes … You can feel it when you're wearing your clogs. (Dat voel je op je klompen aan. ←Dutch saying) what do you think BC means? Do I have three guesses? They are: British Columbia, Brilliant Computer or Behave C00L.Furthermore, I'm glad you weren't diagnosed with blood clots, so as soon as you have them compression stockings, enjoy their behaviour. Thanks for sharing your insights on the EVGA team. Now I'll be off to get some OCR work done (not even at 10% yet and there's more to come). |

Good Afternoon Base Campers!
----------------------------------------Christmas Race 2017 SeriousCrunchers at #13 continue to gain on us. Now they are only 220,857 points behind us, a gain of no less than 66,656 points. They may pass us in a few days ![]() That would never have happened if Little Brother had not went astray, tsk, tsk, tsk ... We are still #12, and Kraland #11. We gained somewhat better at Kraland than yesterday. We came closer by 40,442 points, and are now 361,467 pooint behind Kraland. Barred any mishaps and Kraland getting more members, I'm again optimistic that we can finish at a shared #11/#12 with Kraland. We'll see what tomorrow brings. Kraland Challenge III We’re losing. Short and sweet. SeriousCrunchers and Kraland are running faster than we are timewise. It gets worser and worser. ![]() - on to happier subjects: Dinner - The menu was duck. Again. - But! They remembered me - she who is friendless and sits alone - from last Thursday and decided they couldn’t give me duck. Again ![]() so they suggested a shrimp coctail followed by pork loin in a creamy mushroom sauce and lots on the side inclusive of fine fennel. People are so good to me ![]() ![]() I was grateful, and ended up with ordering a glass of glögg (Glühwein/mulled wine) with æbleskiver – impossibe to explain even in a lot of words. But believe me: it’s delicous. And of course I asked the cook to pack take outs for all of you with some to spare if we should get a polar bear dinner guest. The play was far better than the one I saw last Thursday which was most of all was a rational medical record. This one was loving, caring, and poetic based on research at many nursing homes and conversations with the patients, those who were old and those who were old and suffered from dementia, too. Captain adriverhoef, I would love to go on an adventure like the one you outline. Oh, yes, and just call my name (it’s Anne-Lise in case you forgot). I thought you would never ask. May I postpone it until I can discard those unflattering compression stockings? They go so poorly with my tail and my bikini. And you take care of it all? I can live with that ![]() So we’re getting a new computer for the reception! Whauw! I like you invest in Grand Hotel's future. Can it crank out a lot of points, results and run times while we keep track of our guests and you do your music work? Afstandsmeter – Google have oceans of these jokes to brighten our days – however, I believe every handyman needs an afstandsmeter now. And I love the keks (bisquits) on that symbolize the cookie prayer on the afstandsmeterexpertweb page. Are pictures of keks standard for the cookie warning? I’m sure the EVGA boys would love to come to your Bostella party tonight. None of us would ever dream of spoiling the Grand Hotel parquet floors dancing with clogs. Do I have three guesses? They are: British Columbia, Brilliant Computer or Behave C00L. Yes, you do. And you’re right on with #3 ![]() Thank you for your compehensive post. Good luck with what you’re at and the ’more to come’ too. I can take extra shifts here at the front desk if need be. I would rather not hear anything more about compression stockings. One has one's vanity ![]() Forget them stockings, forget my tail, and Dance Me to the End of Love [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Feb 23, 2018 11:36:15 AM] |

Right, right, right, Base Campers! I hope you don't mind me reporting about …
- the Christmas Race 2017 Team SeriousCrunchers at #13 is still gaining on team top40.nl. Now that team is only 170,270 points behind us on #12, a gain of ± 50k points in one day. If somebody new would join our team, we could easily stay ahead. We came somewhat closer in points to Kraland than yesterday. The difference is still 274,255 points, today we got closer by 87,212 points. Can we keep up this pace? Let's see what tomorrow brings. - Kraland Challenge III Short and sweet: we'll stay at #6. While mevrouw Little Mermaid enjoyed æbleskiver ("appelschijfjes" or appelbeignets) yesterday I'm imagining that butter baked poffertjes (also available in chocolate) covered in a little (een beetje) powder-sugar are as delicious and I hope she'll forgive mentioning that I'm not minding her wearing these lovely compression stockings (she needs it!). ![]() |

Good Afternoon Base Campers!
----------------------------------------Thank you so much, captain adriverhoef, for doing the business part so well ![]() You will not believe this – or maybe you will ![]() I had made a l-a-r-g-e post and I must have forgotten to KliK ’Reply to the post’ to post it ![]() Your business part is unbelievably close to what I recall to have written, except for Kraland III Challenge Where I wrote: Captain adriverhoef, we’re sinking. Better ready the lifeboats ![]() Otherwise I told a story about me being un-Dutch yesterday. I gave my bicycle away. ![]() Six years ago I had the integrated support leg repaired and the mechanic fell in love with that bicycle. I think he was a collector. My bike is a classic Swedish Crescent in fairly good shape with a mother-of-pearl paint job. So I went to that bicycle shop, but the guy was long gone. However, they were interested and would try to track him down. My bicycle has served me for 36 years on two continents. It went to the USA and back. I never really liked to bike – always headwind and uphill. And wet. Still, it was a little melancholy. A Danish MP ran on an independent ticket all by himself and got elected. He promised tailwind on all the bicycle lanes. Jacob Haugaard, the man in question, is an entertainer. I also had a part about not seeing the polarbear, but still having the orangutan on our payroll – and this I whispered, because he may have forgotten his plans or be SNURKend. As for the dinner, I had run out of ideas. Your æbleskiver look absolutely delicious. Have you been frying them all day? You use powdered sugar for a dusting exactly as it should be done ![]() Perfect. ![]() I’ll put out some strawberry preserve to give it a Danish Navajo twist. What I settled for for dinner was a sudden inspiration: Wine and Roses and a dusting of love. See, I had a dusting as well. And I found this picture to top it off or bottoming it out: ![]() - and thank you for your sweet compression stocking comment - so schön kann doch kein Mann sein ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Feb 23, 2018 11:46:45 AM] |

Good Morning Base Campers!
Once you retire, you get all the time in the world. There is nothing you must do to earn a living – at least not where I live. The government pays you a monthly pension; many have private pensions on top of that. So, you don’t need to work to get by. Nevetheless many keep working full or part time gainfully or voluntarily. Many fill up their days with worthy and less worthy causes, and they are very busy. Also, it doesn’t take them/us much to feel that chores, voluntary pleasures, necessary obligations, and appointments fill an entire day. For the most part just one daily must-do gets blown up, so you cannot do anything else that day. ”No, I cannot this afternoon, because the plumber will come at 7.30 am to fix the fixture.” It will take him 20 minutes max. It’s ridiculous when you are a working person to watch all these busy retired people, but when it’s your own turn, you probably get likewise. You can fight it to som degree, but you cannot avoid it totally. You get sucked in. It must be one aspect of ageing. You watch yourself and your mind and ask: ’Am I like this?’ Yes, you are like this, min of meer, more or less. Or should I say less or more? Today I had my German class and we dedicated the latter of two hours to hygge. We had ordered smørrebrød – open sandwiches – and brought what we would like to drink. I should definitely not have had this much white wine at 11 am. This afternoon I went dancing free style with my new friends. We are five now, but the floor is still plenty for us to fling out arms and legs. Tonight I have ticket for a concert. Stand up only. And this is far, far too much for one day. Usually I’m better at spacing I need to, I have fibromyalgia; the fatigue part usually worse than the pain part but sometimes things will clash, and I suffer severely from the fear-of-missing-out syndrome. - on to business Christmas Race 2017 Coming up from behind, SeriousCrunchers are really snapping at our hamstrings now, captain adriverhoef. Just 45,764 point, and we’ll drop back to scary #13. Where do they get it from? We on our part have gained on Kraland. We gained no less than 148.605 point. It looks like a miscalculation. If it isn’t: Where do we get it from? Kraland III Challenge No improvement over yesterday. Worse. ![]() No new members arrived – but we still have our yodap Captain adriverhoef, you tried the positive way to entice more crunchers to help out be it temporarily or preferably permanently. It would be so sweet if somebody came. We would pamper her or him with the best from our Grand Hotel. Foam bath, slippers, chocolates, flowers, a fruit basket, of course our hallmark silk sheets, fire in the fireplace, and all the music in the Netherlands, free Dutch lessons, and room service. Tonight we shall have tofu to save on CO2 emissions. For dessert there will be rødgrød med fløde. I don’t like to make this stunt, but it has to be done now and then as a national obligation. ![]() You will have a free lesson of Danish on top of the Dutch: How to pronounce rødgrød med fløde + a few other essentials. ![]() |

Good Morning Base Campers!
Advertising I forgot when I listed all the perks Grand Hotel will offer new guests that not everybody likes fancy de luxe. Yodap our resident (still) orangutan asked for simple quarters. We can go very low, too, if you like. We will create a dungeon hole for you if that’s your idea of a nice place to stay ![]() ![]() For more than eight years the ”Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK” thread has discussed energy forms, pollution, climate, and energy costs. This morning receiving my weekly newsletter from the Danish Meteorlogical Institute, I looked a little closer that I use to do, and I discovered Polar Portal which comes in English as well as Danish. I take it you prefer the English version. It’s a treasure trove of information. ![]() I took a quick look and decided that everybody interested in melting of the Arctic ice cap and its implications would be interested in diving into this ice cold and matter-of-factly scientific and still entertaining website. Here is all you need to know with daily updates and pretty pictures. Enjoy. Winter solstice Today, December 15, is not winter solstice, but the sun will set 3 seconds later than it did yesterday when it said goodbye at 15:36:38 – that’s 3 pm for you leftponders. And that development will continue straight into our White Nights – from a movie title I found covers the mood of midsummer so beautifully; it sounds far better than ’light nights’. Right until December 31 our mornings will happen later culminating with an 08:39:24 sunrise. Then the days will expand from the morning end as well. ![]() Christmas 2017 Race No update since the figures yesterday. Kraland III Challenge It’s over. It’s so much over that I cannot find any records of it! ![]() |

Dinner last night was enticing, delicious and full of lovely small surprises. There were long tall glasses with Sting's wine "Message in a bottle", chicken-thigh, scallop (sounds like the Dutch word schelp which means 'shell'), shrimp with halibut (heilbot), wasabi-ice, tuna-fish, salmon and there was duck-breast on a delicate thin piece of Indian papadum for everyone, too. Additionally, there were also five small pieces of cold desert.
----------------------------------------It's 12:00 UTC again and the new team scores are here! $ date -u Fri Dec 15 12:07:58 UTC 2017 There was a complaint registered at the hotel desk that the records of the races went missing, so I'm including the links. Christmas Race 2017 Yesterday: Today: Kraland III Challenge Yes, it’s over and done. I think team top40.nl was closing in on Kraland and could have been much closer … tsk, tsk, tsk. If you know what I mean. ![]() [Edit 3 times, last edit by adriverhoef at Dec 15, 2017 1:10:11 PM] |

Good Afternoon Base Campers!
----------------------------------------Christmas 2017 Race Just a few comments to our Captain adriverhoef’s numbers: We are back at the #13, which is not good for Grand Hotel's business. SeriousCrunchers passed us. The captain sujo1 has his one-more-year-has passed-day today the Dutch influence ![]() So we better regard this as our present to him. We gained on Kraland. Yesterday’s large gain was correct. Today’s is to the normal side. 54,932 points. SeriousCrunchers will probably pass Kraland tomorrow or Sunday by the latest, and we intend to push the best we can, and regaining the desired #12 spot should be obtainable in three days. Dinner No problem. We’ll take what our Captain adriverhoef had yesterday and insist he takes us to the place where he wined and dined, while we munched on tasteless tofu. We’ll have a dinner full of …enticing, delicious and full of lovely small surprises Yes, please, we are ready for lovely small surprises There were long tall glasses with Sting's wine "Message in a bottle", chicken-thigh, scallop (sounds like the Dutch word schelp which means 'shell'), shrimp with halibut (heilbot), wasabi-ice, tuna-fish, salmon and there was duck-breast on a delicate thin piece of Indian papadum for everyone, too. Additionally, there were also five small pieces of cold desert. Give us a break! We had tofu, captain. TOFU! We’ll also insist that our captain does the ordering – we cannot say schelp. For once we shall dress up – we sense that we’re going places ![]() ![]() P.S. I hope it doesn’t creep through compression stockings – there has been a violent outbreak of scabies at the school where I went dancing yesterday. It has been closed and is undergoing cleaning and desinfection … ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Feb 23, 2018 11:49:47 AM] |

----------------------------------------(Captain returns to the Grand Hotel) Give us a break! We had tofu, captain. TOFU! What do you say? Tofu? Where is Manuel?
