When will FightAids@Home end?

When is this grid project expected to be completed?

Re: When will FightAids@Home end?

The work in progress now will end sometime in 2008, but the FightAIDS@Home scientists are planning more experiments, and don't foresee a firm end date.

Re: When will FightAids@Home end?

Just looked over at the updated experiment progress page and saw that a number of them were completed and the current being at 75%

Good catch Sek

Also, a detailed update from Dr. Perryman about the current experiment:

Hello spydercanopus,

Since HIV mutates so rapidly, it's hard to give a definite answer. We're trying to discover inhibitors that will work against the multi-drug-resistant mutants (that is, the "superbugs"). Actually, we're trying to find the inhibitors that will both work against the current superbugs and also help decrease the emergence of new superbugs.

I suppose that somewhere in the years to decades range is a safe guess. I certainly won't be running out of questions/experiments any time soon.

Thanks for your help!
Dr. Alex Perryman

Re: When will FightAids@Home end?

And *when* you've found the ultimate protease inhibitor molecules, will you or someone using the techniques/software/experience gained in finding those, to try finding drugs that attack HIV in other ways, i.e. in different drug "classes"?

I enjoy reading progress notes (at a technical summary level) and thoughts for the future of FAAH, from the FAAH scientists, as in the post above. I would like to have these arrive in my inbox more often than the FAAH formal newsletters are published, and I'm sure that if more crunchers were to receive them too, it would reduce the number of crunchers dropping out, and help them demonstrate to possible new recruits that donating their computer time is worthwhile. Is there a forum just for scientists' comments and limited selected reply questions & discussion? Is how to subscribe obvious to new crunchers?

Hi Rick,

Yes. If/when there is no longer a need for new HIV protease inhibitors, then we will focus on other drug targets from HIV. We might start working on some of those other targets sooner, too (in addition to HIV protease). We'll let you know.

We freely share the techniques and software that we use for this project as well as the insight that we gain from it. We hope that other labs will use these for their own drug design projects against HIV and against other diseases.

I'm glad that you enjoy reading the technical details. I do appreciate your interest and enthusiasm.

At this point, I haven't heard anything about trying to start a 2nd FA@H forum focused on the technical side. Sending frequent e-mails about the progress to everyone who runs FA@H could cause more harm than good. It might become a nuisance.......just one more thing that clogs everyone's inbox. But whenever you have a technical question, feel free to post it to this forum. I usually respond during nights and weekends, since the research keeps me very busy during the weekdays. Thus, it might take me a while to respond. But I try to answer all of the questions directed at me. And we'll try to keep the progress updates on http://fightaidsathome.scripps.edu/ as current as possible.

Thank you very much for your help,
Dr. Alex Perryman
